Vic: Fronts and troughs 9 - 19 July

Warm for July this morning, especially with a SWly. Yesterday was freezing in comparison.

Total of 10mm since Wednesday night.

Nastynight in the Dandenongs with fog, heavy drizzle and occasional downpours of rain and hail and some hefty wind gusts (a few big branches down in the garden, one of which just missed the chook shed by about 30 cm ) Just less than 30mm in the gauge MTD is approaching 80mm. Could crack average by the end of the week.

Not that cold - last night's system appeared to be a cold front which became a warm front. A burst of cold air surged towards us, then contracted away from us.

Good to see the east getting a decent soaking and balancing the ledger somewhat! It was amazing watching that conveyor belt of rain running along the Otway coast last night and straight up over the Dandenongs, Yarra Valley, Baw Baw etc and on up to Buller and the north-east ranges.

Meanwhile, we had a mere 4mm, so 39mm for the dates.

About 20mm over the past few days. Decent fall

Mild (for a winter swly) foggy and drizzly day up here. Just shy of 3mm more in the gauge. Damp weather continuing still late on Thursday into early Friday. We could make our monthly average by the end of the week at this rate If we pass average, that would make 3 months in a row (which doesn’t happen too often nowadays ). Big turn around from earlier in the year when we saw five months in a row below average.

Coming down the hill today was a notable increase in runoff from a day or two back. Locally the soil is approaching saturation

Soil is close to saturation here as well, with standing water appearing in spots after a heavy shower. Despite that, we’re tracking a little poorly so far this month given the less than favourable synoptic setup for these parts, although still a couple of weeks to go. 11c max today, which is slightly above average. Wind was wild last night, but has moderated somewhat this evening. Still, enjoying the wintry pattern.

Just noticed a dent on my car from a fallen branch

Saw the branch in the morning but presumed it fell straight down, but instead it must've bounced off.

Pushing 30mm over the past 4/5 days, which is more than expected (2 particularly heavy showers dealt most of it).

Foggy and drizzly this morning. Just 0.4mm overnight.

Turned mild here at 7C. We’ve got warm air advection for the next two days (so tending drizzly), before a couple of sneaky fronts to close out the sequence. Could well get another 20mm before it is done here.

Fair amount of drizzle here as well this morning. Bit unusual for this side of town with the west/south westerly airstream. Usually it comes from the south for us.

Fog and drizzle more or less non-stop the past 24 hours. About 3mm in the gauge.

Sneaky front later today, which will bring more wind and showers. Same again tomorrow. They aren’t overly impressive, but might be worth a few mms. We are up to ten wet days in a row so turning turning into quite a damp spell. Should add at least three more, and if the changes the next week are timed right, could end up around 20 days

Damp, foggy and drizzly day in the Dandenongs. Another 4mm banked We missed the heaviest showers but made up for it with drizzle.

Next front tomorrow. About 20mm to our average. Might almost get there by weekend.

EC had 4mm here for today and we got 4mm. Never was much weather in this one. Same tomorrow, though EC does have 5mm so about 20% wetter

3mm here today and a maximum of 10.8c. The east is clearly doing very well this month, which is great. Not quite so well here - we’re getting regular rain but still tracking a bit below average. Currently 27mm MTD. It’s not really an issue given that May and June were well above average, so the soil is wet and the place is green, but it does reflect the predominant westerly showery pattern this month.

Similar story here, currently on 27mm for the month with the westerly flow. Quite damp though and it will run hard if another tropical feed gets into place before spring.

Water storages around here (Coliban water) have jumped to 72%, an increase of 4% from this time last year. Main storage, the Upper Coliban reservoir is now 82% and creeping closer to spilling.
