Fair bit of fog this morning. Feels very much like Sydney or Wollongong.

Very hard to forecast temps this week for the BoM for the Melbourne metro. Could go either way.

Climbed to 38.7c so far and has dropped back a little to 37.8c. It was already 34c here at 9am this morning as a hot air mass moved through us and down towards Melbourne. DP of 4c, so it’s a dry mass and the wind is gusting a bit now. Horrible conditions outside and the garden is really struggling.

A horrible 42c outside. And that's with high cloud. It's an oven and I hate it.

Incidentally, 47.7c so far at Tarcoola in S.A today.

Hotter in parts of Tas than here. Was humid, but got nowhere near 36 despite a 36 in Ferny Creek. Anywhere near the bay has been hugging a pocket of cooler, more humid air. Shame there's no trigger to make use of these conditions. In desperate need of a storm

36C back in FC. About 30C here in Walkerville with thick sea fog over Bass Strait. Vis was down to less than 100m this arvo on Waratah Bay with a mid 20s temperature. Crazy stuff :(

Another awful day inland tomorrow but edging colder in the south. Still no real change to flush this record heatwave away :o worry is that this heat relentlessly bakes the landscape making us really vulnerable if a hot windy day comes..

Drove back down from Byron Bay inland via Tamworth and Wagga Wagga through to Shepparton and back to Melbourne over the last couple of days. Searing heat - temp on car thermometer read 42+ most of the way once over the ranges inland and 45 degrees just outside Wagga last night. The heat is extraordinary inland, all the more so given that 2 weeks ago when we drove up it was much the same! The coastal fringe has been thankfully cooler but as soon as you are outside that, it’s absolutely roasting. Wonder if this will continue as we go towards feb and extend? The hot air mass just seems to keep building.

Wow what a time to make that journey. I dont know how people cope in the country where it is really hot.

Looks like some cloud and monsoon type weather will develop towards the end of this week, which may help end the cycle, or at least disrupt it. Still, it's all fairly weak, so vast areas of the country will see clear skies, ergo a lot of thermal radiation.

Who knows what Feb will bring at this stage. It's definitely possible that more extreme temperatures will have the chance to build, therefore it's possible the south east has a lot more baking in store.

We can only hope the monsoon kicks into gear, as the cloud is generates will limit thermal buildup.

A couple of 40's in a row here, maybe another one today. Not quite the 2013 heat level but getting close.

First negative SAM since early November at the moment. Ominous signal for the next 10 days for a strong frontal system squeezing the pressure gradient. EC projecting a serious code red next Thursday http://www.theaustralianweatherforum.co ... 57#p108457

Yet another summer where the only thing that is saving Vic is that lack of wind  These heatwaves which roll on for weeks are becoming such a feature of our summer, with a semi-permanent heat low setting up over inland southeast Australia. These never used to happen :? (the northwest Australia heat low is well known, but not one in the southeast).

Most models and ensembles don't look as bad as the EC single run which is a shocker. Mid 40s, winds to 100km/hr :? Still, pretty clear that next week won't bring any real cooling trend with most high 30s to 40s across most the state :(

Today brings some relief in southern Vic and is a tad cooler in the north. Similar tomorrow, but a bit of rain. BTW in FC our DP dropped to -20C last night. That the lowest value I've seen. At one point our RH was near 5%. That is dangerous dry, with fires able to burn intense even at night with that combination. Thankfully little wind,
