VIC - Cool to mild with a sequence of fronts: September 18 to 24 2018

Post by hillybilly »

Another week of weak fronts zipping through, mainly delivering for Tasmania and coastal areas. Temperatures around seasonal averages, though could get quite chilly later on the weekend.

Rain looks lean in the north, but will add up around the coastal parts and ranges. Locally topping 20-30mm.

I might start doing a rain dance soon if this dry continues 😆 I couldn’t even get a mm of rain over
the weekend.

Nice band of rain on the radar but bone dry at ground level. Going to be watering the garden again. :(

These airmasses in recent weeks are among the nastiest I’ve seen in terms of dryness for this time of year. Feels like a bad El Niño/positive IOD atm. Few more weeks and we will see some dangerous fire weather if this doesn’t change soon :( on the weekend we saw some spots on NSW have near record heat followed by near record cold, aided by the very dry air.

Not reallly liking the progs. All the systems are moisture starved.

Rainband looks ok on radar but clearly most to all is evaporating.

A quick few mm here with that mini rain band.

Just spotted something quite interesting on the El Nino topic http://www.theaustralianweatherforum.co ... 46#p106546

2.1mm this afternoon and evening. Shame the fronts are so unproductive, especially since we’re still getting them fairly regularly. At this stage, looks like another below average month coming up, unless something surprising happens next week.

0.2mm in FC. First band broke up, and the second slipped under us :(

Maybe a mm or two today.

Patchy mostly light falls as expected. The dry low levels are really killing the rainfall potential with Synoptics ok, but so little moisture left to squeeze out.

I was worried about our rain water pipe diversion project at this time of year,
Long Deep trenches filling with water and mounds of wet soggy clay,
Nope, the chickens were bathing in the dust of the newly filled trenches..
Had to splash water around back yard last week, also haven't had our usual wet spungy soggy back lawn this year (Yet)

I finally received some rain last night albeit only 2mm taking my MTD to 3mm and YTD to 206mm...
I have never seen it so dry in September.

Another 0.2mm in FC today

Feels like 2015 now imho. That year it was dried off across most of Vic by early October and we had the hottest grand final on record. Nasty bushfires in October.

For the most part temps look to be on the cool side for the rest of the month. Dry though :(

Cold start here today with a decent frost: -1degC atm.

We've scored 6mm for the last 2 days bringing us to 25mm for the month. Still plenty of water around after a good year so far, but we're going to have to hurry up to get a decent September total...

It does seem colder than normal (incessant wind perhaps?) but the numbers say we're on average for maximums and only 1 degree below average for minimums.

Im still getting max's of less than 10C more often than not. Early next week looks particularly cold.

Cold morning here as well with a minimum of 0.5c. But up to 15c this afternoon. Not sure how we’ll get to our average rain here either. MTD is 24.5mm but not much ahead in the current outlook. It’s still green and the ground is wet but that might not last long if we get some hot weather early in October.

Sorry for the slow reply Macedonian. 2C minimum yesterday. True 0C minimums are rare for us being on a hilltop - almost all correspond with snow rather than frost nights :). The valley below us however seems to be white with frost more often than not this winter/ spring!

No prob Gordon. I get a few subzero frost mornings on my mountain side but not as much as lower areas in my local area. I did get a -3 this winter.

Cool and fine in FC. Next few days all look similar, with perhaps a shower Saturday into Sunday.

Struggling to see any meaningful rain atm. Our MTD is stuck on about 30mm, which puts us on track for our driest September in 20 years :? The IOD has popped up to nearly +1 in the past week or two which partly explains the lack of rain.

Btw first rain in 161 days in Alice Springs today. Good to see them finally get a bit after such a nasty dry spell :o
