Some good convection over Geelong at the moment along the trough line, as well as over in East Gippsland where the EC model rightly predicted the highest CAPE values. If any storms are going to affect Melbourne it will be in the next two hours but unfortunately I highly doubt this, due to relatively low dew points as well as some scud cloud to the north west affecting convection. Might get a dribble or two. Attention should turn to Wednesday which is shaping up to be a belter.

Sparks (or spark) has died, now down to sporadic heavy downpours. Great for the lawn I've renovated this weekend!

Thanks Wilko! Some decent convective showers over the peninsulas and I spy some cool looking towers forming over the west towards Bacchus. Very hit or miss though. The wind today really has dried out everything. Still a chance for metro Melbourne until about 9 pm this evening.

Been rather dry out this way for the last couple of weeks. Looks like a bit of rain on its way in the next hour. Not sure if it will weaken as it comes over the range, but some brief but heavy rain on the radar at the moment towards the northwest. Had 22.8c here today and a somewhat summery feel, although very windy.

Welcome Hunter. Looking good as the radar and lightning tracker fires up. Will need the rain after the drying today!

Welcome Hunter. Always good to have others to share our discussions about the weather. Good group here, all keen to share their passion for watching the weather.

Am watching this storm event unfold from Byron Bay. Looks hopeful with the change moving up the bay and the showers thickening. Expect it will fire, but unclear whether this will be west or mainly east of Melbourne.

Do need more rain given the dry few weeks most of Vic has seen. Great to see some decent falls in NSW.

And the Spring storm season has finally begun! Currently sitting under a thunderstorm with rather heavy rain. It feels like we're transitioned climatewise polar-desert-subtropical in the past few weeks.

Hopefully it hangs around for a bit which the radar indicates it might.

Edit: Thunder just heard...

Smashing it down here in Tarneit. Heavy rain, cracks of thunder and a few flashes. No complaints here.

Looks like another band lining up behind it out towards Bacchus Marsh. Welcome Spring 2017!!!

Welcome Hunter.

Just back from two weeks in Pambula - great (for me) holiday weather although mostly boring weather-watching - nothing too warm, low 20's and afternoon seabreezes most days.

Was stinking hot in Gippsland driving there on Saturday 23rd Sep, 35 degrees from about Sale onwards was a shock. Very dry there as is most of the NSW coast including Sydney. Had a couple of quick showers and even some pea-sized hail on Monday 25th for a few minutes which gave the kangaroos a brief shock :)

A few showers on the way back today mainly between Bairnsdale and Stratford - I think we missed the heavier stuff that came through East Gippsland later on.

A nice welcome back to Melbourne with the garden going nuts over the past two weeks, and some flashes and rumbles this evening with some light showers - hello spring :)

Missed that cell by about 5km. Waiting to see if something fire on the top end of the wind change now.

Change proper to push through early tomorrow with a few showers.

Quick 2mm in FC from the last shower. Looks to be all done.

Quick look across the obs shows 2-5mm about as good as it gets across central Vic.

Btw crazy storm in Tibooburra NSW with 20mm in six minutes and wind gusts to 159km/hr. Must be some damage with that :?
