Victoria - Couple of showery fronts: May 1-3

Post by hillybilly »

One of those little events that won't excite too much interest. Slow moving rainband pushing through southern Vic, followed by a couple of cold days. Temperatures are cold enough for snow below 1000m so quite wintery.

Front pushing through here ATM with thick drizzle and fog. Wouldn't be surprised if we sneaked 10mm here.

Showers heading into the bay in the next hour or so.

The Saturday front is one to keep an eye on. GFS has had 6 runs in a row where frontal system spawns a cut off low just east of Tassie. Water temps in eastern Bass strait are bubbling away between 18 to 22c. GFS has the uppers at 500 hPa projected to be around -25c when the cut off low forms. http://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php ... r=au&dpdt=

Other models see it more as a pure frontal system that crosses Victoria and Tassie into the Tasman.

Cold here for early May too. It got to 14.5c at 2pm but a shower of rain came through and it's hovered around 12-13c since then.

I love this bracing weather :)

13.6mm overnight in FC.Quite a surprise - but near perfect set up for topographic enhancement in the southern Dandenongs. We had an unstable NW'ly flow aloft with very moist SW'ly under cutting it. The showers are enhanced from above (gravity waves bouncing off the front of the range) and below forced uplift of the moist SWly. The Ferny Creek total at my AWS and the official one which is a bit drier is way above anything else in the metro area :D

A further 3.6mm today with brief hail and a max of 9.2C :D Dipped to just 6C at 2:30pm this arvo... quite wintery.

Fire will be cranking tonight.

5C overnight in FC. We tend to have very small diurnal temperature ranges as we move towards winter being on a slopping plateau just below 600m.

Looks like a couple of nice days ahead, before a cold front for Saturday.

Down to 4.9c here overnight. There was a fair bit of cloud about and we registered 0.1mm, which would have kept the temp up a bit. Tonight on the other hand might be a different story if the skies clear.

The baro has just reached 1032 hPa and is still rising. Looking at the maps, it looks like it will be around 1033 hPa by sunrise tomorrow morning over central Victoria. For Kyneton tomorrow morning, I'm tipping -2c and a solid frost

7.7C yesterday for about 30mins.
Pretty cold figures for mid autumn.

Max of 9.7C in FC today. Currently on 8C. Expecting around 4C locally. The low levels are a bit moist for us ATM with a DP of 6C to get too cold. Might see a very light frost (or more likely heavy dew). Fairly decent cover of Sc currently.

From here it looks like clear skies towards mount macedon which i can clearly see thanks to very clear air.

Unsure if we will get the forecast clear skies for tonight...

It's actually quite cloudy here at the moment, maybe clearer up towards mount macedon? Still on the cooler side today - up to 13.2c but that was only briefly. Currently 9.8c. Hard to tell if the cloud will clear later. Places on the northern side of the central ranges will probably be starting with quite a cold and frosty morning.
