Storms bring heaviest rain in seven years to Albany
Rob Sharpe, Saturday June 2, 2012 - 10:24 EST
Overnight a localised thunderstorm pelted Albany with more than 100mm of rain, however most of southwestern WA had less than 5mm.
It was a difficult night to sleep for some, with over 1500 lightning strikes recorded in southern WA. The heavy rain and the occasional wind gust over 50km/h also made it an exciting night for storm watchers.
At times rain was very heavy with 10mm recorded in just ten minutes. Nearby locations recorded around 50mm. North Walpole had 22mm to add to its 93mm from yesterday, however most places to the west had less than 5mm. In the east Esperance didn't record any rainfall.
The localised heavy rain and storms were due to a low pressure trough stretching through western WA. Only the southern-most parts of WA picked up heavy rainfall due to the higher amounts of moisture near the coast.
Today, the trough will weaken and move offshore during the day, bringing a few showers and the odd storm to the southwest coast. Sunday and Monday should be mostly sunny before southerly winds bring a few showers for the working week.
