20mm overnight, no storms though. I did get a bit of storm earlier in the week, I captured these shots. :)

Was plenty of power outages in Perth yesterday, lot of lightning brought down trees, powerlines, knocked out power, sparked isolated fires. A 17 year-old girl was struck by lightning in the wheatbelt yesterday. :( Also, one of our WAWG members' lightning tracker was hit by lightning. LOL, kinda ironic.

Sad to hear about the young girl :( LOL @ the lightning tracker being struck by lightning, ironic indeed!

Nice lightning capture, looks like someone's been scribbling in the sky! :P

Yes, thanks Lily, its great to be on a forum where my posts are read and replied to and I get some interaction with you guys over east. :) I love stalking all the eastern states forums and finding out what's happening there, maybe when I head to Melbourne after uni, I'll be able to chase with you guys. :)

Anyway, interesting times ahead early next week, there'll be a lot of moisture left when TC Alenga dies, that combined with a surface trough and more mid-level support to the west, could provide another few days of heavy showers and storms. Watching Alenga closely at the moment. Currently spying on her using hi-tech radar and satellite imagery. 8-)

WOW. Well the south west of WA did get a dumping. Here is a detailed report from breaking news..news.com.au
Floods cut off town, bring blackouts to Perth

* From: PerthNow
* December 13, 2011 9:09AM

Heavy rains caused flooding and damaged homes overnight. Source: PerthNow

LAST night's downpour brought flooding to homes across Western Australia's south overnight, with the Great Southern town of Williams at one stage cut off by floodwaters.

More than 60 FESA State Emergency Service volunteers from 16 units responded to 76 calls for assistance in the Perth metropolitan area and Great Southern region overnight.

The majority of the calls were for assistance with flooded homes requiring sandbagging, damaged roofs due to heavy rainfall requiring tarping, and trees fallen on to homes and garages.

A caravan at the Kingsley Caravan Park was damaged after a tree fell on it.

In the metropolitan area up to 20 suburbs lost power, and the busiest SES units were North Shore, Bayswater and Rockingham with a total of 46 calls for assistance.

More than 43mm fell on the city, while Mandurah received more than 60mm.

The downpour has brought Perth's annual rainfall to to 860mm, just ahead of the annual average of 857mm.

The massive fall last night means the city has already received more than 70mm for December, well above the average for the month of just 12.8mm.

Further south Katanning received more than 50mm from 6pm onwards while Wandering received a staggering 84mm overnight, the majority of the rain falling between 7pm and 11pm.

In the Great Southern Region, Williams, 160km southeast of Perth, and Narrogin, 192km southeast of Perth, received significant flood damage with homes and roads flooded making travel dangerous.

Williams was isolated for some time overnight with Albany Highway closed due to flooding. It is now reopened.

In the Great Southern, Wandering had 84mm and Katanning 55. Mandurah has had 69mm.

One farmer north of Williams has recorded 127mm, with rain still falling this morning. :o

Further east, Lake Grace had 33mm and Newdegate 21mm.

Falls across the city were also widespread with Perth recording 43.6mm, Champion Lakes 34mm, Rottnest 36mm, Perth Airport 35mm and Swanbourne 30mm, mostly after 10pm.

ABC radio reports that in Perth that one woman's car filled with water after becoming stuck under the notorious Mt Lawley subway.

And a man had to climb from his car after it started floating away on Guildford Road, Mt Lawley at the height of the downpour.

Four Williams households were evacuated to a local hotel due to extensive flooding and the main traffic bridge on Albany Highway in Williams sustained damage.

Narrogin SES received eight calls for assistance and they were assisted by local Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service firefighters.

FESA was also assisted by WA Police and Main Roads.

Today the rain is expected to move south and east through the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions.

Weather is stabilizing across SW WA during tomorrow, some shower and storm activity in isolated areas near the SW coast atm. Models have the trough moving inland on Christmas Eve, so cooler conditions for Christmas day. All depends how quickly this high moves into the bight and whether we see any interaction with moisture in the Indian Ocean.

My prediction for drizzle down here for Christmas may be wrong... models indicate the SE flow won't be that moist, so we'll see mostly sunny weather. Towards the 28th gets interesting, the north is very active now, so heat lows and surface troughs seem to tap into all the moisture giving delivering epic storms to WA.

Latest seasonal outlook predicts a 55% chance of a wetter than normal summer. The BoM also mentioned on the radio that cooler than normal conditions can be expected towards the end of summer and into March. Have to see what La Nina does after that, otherwise autumn could be very interesting indeed...

Boring weather down here, threatening to drizzle down here right now,. Looks like some records were broken today up north though, Onslow reaching 49.2 degrees, their hottest day on record.
No storms yet... haven't had a storm for ages. Looks like I'll have to be content with photographing Christmas lights on Christmas Eve. LOL :P

Well good luck with chasing Chrissy lights - we tried to do that last night at the insistence of the nine year old, but were saddened to see that many people in our area aren't doing it anymore. A few years ago there were gaudy Christmas displays on every street, but now almost nothing. Was a bit disappointing :(

Have a lovely Christmas Pete :)

Yep, you too, happy Christmas to all you easterners and have a happy New Year. :)

Interesting that all the models I was looking at on 28storms' latest video all agree with a deep low (below 1000hPa) developing south of Perth towards New Years Eve and some deep troughing occurring off the coast. Looks like New Year's Eve could go off with a bang. Thunderstorms and fireworks, that would be majorly epic. 8-)

BoM saying showers tomorrow, but they said that today and yesterday. Personally I think the ridging over WA is too weak to really drag moisture off the ocean, its dry as, even with the onshore flow the humidity is 43%! :? So looks like a sunny Christmas then.

Interesting weather ahead, possible a fizzer depending on the timing of the trough and low. If SW'ly change comes early through we're stuffed and any storm activity will north and east away from the coast. Looks promising, but I'm getting too hopeful about this one.
