Narrow band of thunderstorms passing through the Tamar Valley at the moment, heavy rain with lots of lightning and thunder. Warm day in Tassie today with areas of the South reaching 33 degrees. It was 29 here in Launceston. A major bushfire is burning on the Central Plateau around the Great Lake area.

Great soaking rain in Tasmania overnight, most of the falls since 3 am, the north west coast being the focus. Ulverstone has had 78mm, Wynyard 68 mm, Burnie 56 mm, Quamby Bluff 41 mm Launceston 34mm, Devonport 38mm. Rain easing now in the Central North to mist and drizzle. Lighter falls down south with 9 mm in Hobart.

I have just finished calculating the rainfall at Grindelwald (15 km north of Launceston in the Tamar Valley) for 2012. 836 mm fell with May (118.2 mm) and October (116 mm) being the wettest months. October (16.4 mm) was the driest. This yearly total is slightly above average (819 mm). It is drier than the last two years 2011 - 926 mm and 2010 - 1005 mm. It hasn't rained at all here now since December 20th.

Very high temperatures forecast for Tasmania on Friday, 33 degrees in Launceston which is as high as temperatures get up North and 38 in Hobart. The fire danger will be huge.

Obviously an anomaly due to the fires, but still, pretty toasty.

Very dry here in the central north of Tassie. At Grindelwald in the Tamar Valley we've had only 4mm of rain since December 20.

Looks like another dry change Thursday/Friday here in Northern Tasmania with no prospect of rain in the outlook. Clouds may keep the temperature down only forecast 26 in Launceston tomorrow.

Launceston's average for March is 22.5 degrees, so far this month we have had maximum temperatures of 24,27,27,28,30. Forecast for the days ahead is 31,32,29,30,28,30,31. So by the 12th of March our average could be an amazing 29 degrees!! This has to be some sort of record. Oh and we have had no rain either, so far only 36mm for the year.

Launceston had its highest March temperature ever yesterday reaching 33.0 degrees, this breaks the previous record of 32.9 set in 2008. The next six days are forecast to be above 30 degrees. Nothing like this has happened before certainly not in March but any month. Some years we are lucky to get 5 days above thirty for the entire year!!

Got to 32 degrees in Launceston today, that's five days above 30 in a row. Forecast tomorrow is 29 and showers, I'm hoping we can sneak 30 again to keep the run going right through to Wednesday. We are In for a warm night. Minimums above 20 are extremely rare here but it could be on the cards tonight.

Yes you should do well on Thursday Tassiedave. It would be helpful if you could go into your profile and add your location next time you're online, so we know exactly where you are, thanks. :D

Awesome images coming out of Tassie on the aurora on Sunday night. It was too overcast here to see anything. Even saw an aurora photo from Swan Hill!

Launceston would have to be one of the driest places on the Eastern seaboard this June. Only 24mm of rain recorded. We missed completely the cut off LOW in mid June. The dry spell goes back further with less than 30mm since May 17th. With less than 250mm for the year to date we are well down on average. Hobart has fared better in June with around 50mm.

Big falls in South East Tasmania today with a big LOW sitting off our East Coast. Hobart is up to 33mm Mount Wellington 76 mm. Only 2.4 mm in Launceston which is typical of this weather pattern.

Very wet in Tassie in the last couple of months. Catchments are saturated. Here at Grindelwald 15 km north of Launceston I received 150 mm in July and 66mm in the first six days of August

If this scenario comes off given our saturated catchments there could be big trouble with flooding
