Thousands isolated in NSW flood crisis
Tuesday June 21, 2011 - 12:06 EST

Large areas of the New South Wales mid-north coast are under water this morning after the Manning River peaked higher than expected overnight.

The river rose to just over 4.3 metres at Taree overnight.

Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated or are isolated on the mid-north coast and in the Upper Hunter region because of flooding over the past two days.

Rivers from the Clarence near Grafton to the Upper Hunter are still in flood.

State Emergency Services spokesman David Owen says the slightly higher peak means residents of Manning Point, east of Taree, will most likely be isolated for a couple of days.

"We've been informed that there have been 50 people who've voluntarily evacuated to the community centre there," he said.

"There hasn't been an evacuation order as such, they're just people who've volunteered to go up to the community centre."

He says there are also concerns about sewerage, water and power.

The Pacific Highway is expected to remain closed by floodwater at Clybucca, north of Kempsey, until at least the weekend.

The SES says people are still risking their lives trying to cross floodwaters.

Yesterday one man was killed when he was crushed by a tree pushed over by floods.

State Government estimates the floods have already wreaked millions of dollars worth of damage, but the SES says the flood waters are receding as they head south.

The State Government has declared the region a natural disaster area and the Federal Government is also providing financial help for flood-affected areas.

Winds ease but weather warning remains
Tuesday June 21, 2011 - 12:28 EST
Gale force wind conditions across the ACT and parts of New South Wales have eased slightly, although a severe weather warning remains in place.

Forecaster Nick Bright from the Bureau of Meteorology says Canberra has had destructive wind gusts of up to 75 kilometres per hour while there has been 140 kph winds in the Snowy Mountains.

"In fact up to gale force at times in many places around the region," he said.

Mr Bright says there are blizzard conditions in the snow fields, with up to 30 centimetres of snow falling.

The Emergency Services Agency has been called out to remove trees that have fallen across roads, mostly in Canberra's south.

The strong winds have also closed the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

Mr Bright says the worst of the wind has now passed, and the rain should ease tonight.

Canberra had recorded 6 millimetres of rain by midday.

It didn't get very windy here, unlike other areas of the South West Slopes and alpine regions, with some articles stating possible gusts up to 160km/h! We had a gust of 59km/h at 5:32am, but they were generally in the high 30's to low 40's with the front.

I wonder how the catchment will cope with the torrential 11.4mm we had at home, especially after a 4m river rise with basically no rain. Expecting a major flood here soon! :P

Quite annoyed that the Victorian media has not kept us informed of the situation in NSW.

Obviously very serious in places. If l had not read this l would not have known. Nothing on our TV news?

Do you get to hear of the winds in Victoria yesterday on NSW media?
Same on ABC radio in VIC . Its all about VIC! Makes you feel like we live on different continents :x

But l did see some pics of snow falling in Orange today!! Fab! Any chance you could post a pic from the NSW media?

Yes, it's a shame that this kind of news doesn't reach everyone, but I'm sure it would be the same for every state - all the media seem to be very state-centric. :(

Haven't watched the news in a while, but I took a look at a few of our newspapers and couldn't find anything on the winds in Victoria. But I did find an article on the snow in Orange and Oberon. It's quite a sight! And thanks for telling me, otherwise I wouldn't have known! :P

'Everything is all white': heavy snow falls in parts of NSW
Stephanie Gardiner

Parts of central west NSW have disappeared under a blanket of snow, with the "crazy" weather forcing the closure of a major highway.

The Bureau of Meteorology had reports of about 2cm of snow falling in Orange and Oberon, with some falls also in the Blue Mountains, including Mount Victoria.

A layer of snow covers the ground at Mount Victoria today.

Just after 3pm, the temperature in Oberon dropped to 0.2 degrees, with 0.6 in Orange and 0.1 in Mount Boyce, one of the highest points in the Blue Mountains.

Kimmy Yee, who was at work in a bakery in Oberon, described the snowfall as "crazy".

"The cars are all white, everything is all white here.

"It's actually snowing sideways."

Charlie Ginty could see snow settling on the hills about five kilometres outside of Orange.

"The flakes were really big, it was quite heavy."

The Roads and Traffic Authority said heavy snow fall had closed the Great Western Highway between Bathurst and Lithgow and urged drivers the Bathurst, Orange, Blayney and Cowra areas to use caution on the snowy roads.

No problem. :)

Ah, yes, I did here about the damage in Echuca (from WZ). I wonder if a tornado was involved?

I love winter too, wish it would snow here but we're too low (as you can see in my profile info :)). I've been skiing with the school once at Mt Selwyn, and made snowballs on a patch of snow on Mount Kosciusko, and loved every bit of it! :D

Foggy and frosty morning for parts of NSW and VIC
Alex Krisman, Sunday June 26, 2011 - 14:13 EST

A broad high pressure system parked over NSW has created another foggy and frosty morning across large regions of the eastern inland.

Temperatures dropped below freezing from the Victorian Alps all the way up to the NSW Northern Tablelands. Cooma on the Southern Tablelands dropped to -9 degrees, 8 below average. Armidale on the Northern Tablelands fell to -3, 3 degrees below average.

Visibility dropped for many locations, with the settled weather providing the perfect set up for thick fogs to develop. Campbelltown in Sydney's southwest, Lismore in the Northern Rivers and Albury on the Southwest Slopes stumbled through overnight fog that limited visibility to 150m or less.

Further south in Victoria: Kilmore in the North Central and the Latrobe Valley in Gippsland had under 100m visibility. The fog in Victoria was generally longer lasting, with Kilmore still foggy by late morning.

At least two more nights of fog and frost can be expected due to a strong, lingering high pressure system that will create clear skies and light winds.

My forecast was for 17C, was contemplating going higher because it was warming up early, but I thought the approaching frontal cloud cover would keep it down. :)

ACCESS-R brings heavier rain from the NW later, so we're still in with a chance for at least 10mm come tomorrow, as GFS and the OCF ensemble suggest.

Am really looking forward to this week after the run of above average temperatures, it should be cool and showery for the most part. 10-12C max's almost every day!! :D

Well, we didn't quite get 10mm in the end, in fact, 8.7mm fell at home and 6.4mm at the airport. Should equal that again over the next few days. :)

It's looking more organised, so should be very wet and windy within the next half an hour or so. Wasn't expecting that, none of the models picked it anyway.
