Already 101mm today at Evans Head, 100mm at Seale Road, and 96mm at Mangrove Mt and Kangy Angy. 2 day totals ranging from 110-140mm near Kempsey.

Looks like there could easily be some very dangerous flooding developing along parts of the NSW coastline this week...

Another waterspout/tornado to add to the 4 Avoca waterspouts only last month.

Wild winds strike Red Rock
14th June 2011

IT WAS a terrifying morning for Red Rock residents but perhaps the most shaken would be the bowling club's cleaner who was reportedly inside the building when the roof was torn off by a whirlwind.

Red Rock resident Brenden Neal said a “massive water spout” came off the ocean around 5.50am, removing about 70% of the bowling club's roof, before hitting four houses opposite and heading west into town.

He said it continued for 2km – its path 30 to 40 metres wide – smashing windows, taking trees down and warping roller doors before it dissipated over Corindi River.

“The bowling club won't be operating for a while and it's not a pretty sight here,” Mr Neal said.

“The cleaner was inside when it hit and she's really shaken.

“It was the loudest rain storm I've ever heard – there was a bang and 30 seconds of noise when the tornado hit.”

He said there has been no power since 6am, with Essential Energy estimating it will be two or three days before it's restored.

“Down town is a disaster zone and everyone is banding together with generators and chainsaws.

“I'd say 10 to 15 of about 200 houses in the community were heavily affected.”

Mini-tornado hits Red Rock

RED Rock has been smashed by what has been described by eyewitnesses as a mini-tornado which struck this morning.

The local bowling club lost part of its roof and homes were also damaged.

Reports are also coming in about damage to homes in Woolgoolga, Sandy Beach and Emerald Beach.

We will keep you updated as the news comes to hand.

Kempsey residents ordered to evacuate
Tuesday June 14, 2011 - 19:55 EST
The State Emergency Service has issued an evacuation order for businesses and residents in the Kempsey CBD, as the flood situation worsens.

The Kempsey Bridge is predicted to reach 6.4 metres between 1:00am and 3:00am (AEST), which could cause the levy to overtop.

This could lead to inundation of the city centre and residents are being advised to evacuate within the next four hours.

Meanwhile, SES crews are keeping a close eye on river levels in other parts of the mid north coast, as heavy rain continues to fall across the region.

Flood warnings are current for the Bellinger, Nambucca, Orara, Macleay, Hastings and Manning Rivers, with water levels continuing to rise in some areas.

This afternoon the SES began evacuating around 400 residents in villages across the Lower Macleay as a precaution, saying those areas will become isolated later this evening.

Near Bellingen about 800 residents remain isolated in the Thora Valley.

The SES rescue officer Bill Shipp says it will be a while before the river falls.

"It could be a couple of days," he said.

"Because it takes a fair while for the water to come down - that's if the rain stays as it is, but if it gets more rain coming it could take a bit longer."

Further rain is forecast, with the severe weather expected to move slowly south.

The weather bureau is also forecasting dangerous surf conditions for coastal activities, such as swimming, surfing and rock fishing.

Thank you.. Apocalypse for your time in posting this comprehensive report of rainfall for this ECL. :D Fascinating read. Some amazing rain.
Reminds me of the flood we had in the west of Vic earlier in the year.. We had a hundred mm everyday for 3 days and many townships were flooded.
I remember being cut off for 3 days because of flood water crossing major roads

Would l be right in calculating that Fishermans reef , where is that? Coastal town l assume.
has had around 500mm in 3 days
174 + 144 + 181 = 499mm of rain in 3 days. Anyone would think tat that is monsoonal totals in NSW! in June.
Is this a regular thing for NSW in winter ?

No worries Crikey, thanks for reading. :)

I think Fishermans Reach might be a suburb of South West Rocks, which is a coastal town half way between Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie, not too sure though.

You're right, they've had 499mm in the last 3 days, and also 71.4mm on Saturday, so they're now up to 570.4mm in the last 4 days!

I wouldn't say it's regular to get falls like this in winter, but it's quite possible in some years with the stronger ECL's. What's amazing with this system is, is that a lot of the rain has fallen with the onshore flow from the ridging along the coast, and without the ECL.

SES to keep a close watch on river levels overnight
Wednesday June 15, 2011 - 18:16 EST
Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from Kempsey south to Taree

The State Emergency Service says there are at least 10,000 residents isolated by floodwaters and hundreds more have been evacuated from the Kempsey CBD and lower Macleay.

The wild weather buffeting the region is gradually moving south with the focus now on the Port Macquarie and Manning areas.

Peter Floyd with the Oxley SES says the Hastings River at Port Macquarie's Settlement Point is expected to rise with tonight's high tide, and local residents have been ordered to evacuate.

"With the flood peak tonight there could be some inundation depending how high it goes, but everybody is aware of that and we will be watching that very carefully."

Residents have also been ordered to evacuate from low lying areas around Taree and Wingham.

The RTA says the Pacific Highway is now open between Macksville and Nambucca Heads.

However the highway is still closed between Port Macquarie and Clybucca.

Further north, one lane of the highway is open at Corindi and the Waterfall Way is now open.

Bronwyn Martin from the RTA says there are lengthy delays all along the highway.

"We're still advising motorists to avoid all non essential travel in that area if they can because they have alternating traffic conditions in place," she said.

"Traffic in the area is really heavy so if you don't need to be there please stay away and in particular in Kempsey it is going to remain closed we expect for at least five days."

Wettest month on record for parts of the Mid North Coast
Douglas Fenton, Thursday June 16, 2011 - 11:27 EST
An east coast low has brought more heavy rain to the Mid North Coast and Hunter overnight.

Smoky Cape has already picked up over half a metre of rain this month, with a further 86mm falling to 9am today. This makes it their wettest month since April 1963 and the wettest June on record. Taree is close to 5 times its monthly average, with a further 82mm of rain to 9am on Thursday bringing the monthly total to 330mm.

The heaviest falls were picked up in the Hunter during the last 24 hours. Lostock Dam gained 106mm to 9am, their highest in about 2 years.

All this rain has to go somewhere and with heavy rain falling since Sunday, the ground is completely saturated in parts. Additional rain can't soak into the ground and so it is running off and causing flooding of low lying areas and has brought flash flooding elsewhere.

Major flooding is currently affecting the Manning River at Taree and further south, there is major flooding on the Paterson River in the Hunter at the Gostwyck Bridge.

Thankfully the heavy rain will ease today as the low heads east across the Tasman and a high pushes in from the west, bringing mostly sunny skies to the east coast on Friday.

Tornado time for north coast
Thursday June 16, 2011 - 10:49 EST

The weather bureau says this week's tornado at Red Rock, north of Coffs Harbour was not surprising given that the north coast is now in peak tornado time.

Michael Logan from the Bureau of Metrology says the weather patterns this time of year are favourable for tornados which often begin as a water spout.

The Red Rock event and last year's Lennox Head tornado both happened in June.

"There are a couple of similarities in the sense that both came in from off the water and we do at this time of the year see a fair bit of water spout activity up and down the new south wales coast and that's just because the conditions are right at this time of the year," Mr Logan said.

He explained that the water spouts often need the combination of unstable air but also they need the contrast of warm waters.

But are we seeing more of these events on the north coast?

The bureau says it is unclear if there are more tornados happening on the north coast or just more people seeing them.

Michael Logan says tornados are a definite feature of the north coast.

He says there are historical accounts of tornados but there are other factors which affect the reporting of the events.

"In more recent times the reports have become more frequent in that we have more incidents in the database but it is hard to work out if we have more occurring or if it just that we have much bigger population densities in these areas and also as we move into the digital age it is also much easier for people to record these features," Mr Logan said.

Just drove past the river and wondered why it was so high, so I went on the BOM website and checked the river level, and it is 5.075m!! We haven't had enough rain here for it to flood like that, and I don't think anywhere upstream has had much rain. So confused?

Thanks Lily. :P

I was up at 4am to take my brother to work! He gives me money I guess, which has to be a bonus. :)

Solicitor hopes Riverina floods won't be forgotten in inquiry
Monday June 20, 2011 - 09:40 EST
Unresolved claims will be the focus of a Riverina submission to a Senate inquiry into the insurance industry's handling of the summer floods.

Solictor Julie Maron said the Wagga Legal Aid office provided advice to more than 100 people trying to make claims after the October and December floods.

Ms Maron said her office's submission to the federal inquiry will look at claims handling by insurance companies, delays and prejudices towards owners of older homes.

She says 'claims fatigue' has also emerged among local policy holders.

"They get beaten by paperwork and the process," she said.

"And we think they've settled for less money they should, or that they're entitled to, just to make the problem go away and just to get some finalisation.

"We're hoping the inquiry can address the issues that lead to that situation so that it doesn't happen again."

Ms Maron is concerned the Queensland floods could take precedence in the inquiry.

Ms Maron is encouraging those who experienced difficulties making claims, to complete an online survey at the Australian Parliament House website.

"We hope that the inquiry visits our area, Wagga, Lockhart, The Rock and hear from local people about our experiences," she said.

"I think that we've got a lot to offer to the inquiry about what our local people went though.

"Although Queensland did have terrible events over December and January, it's not just Queensland.

"We had some pretty harsh weather as well, and some people really badly affected by things the insurance companies put them through."

Bureau: Rough weather mixed blessing
Monday June 20, 2011 - 13:09 EST
People in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains and Monaro are battening down with rough weather tipped for later today.

Winds are expected to reach more than 100kmh and up to one 125kmh in the alpine peaks.

The north-west winds have prompted a sheep graziers' alert for the region.

But The Weather Bureau's Sean Carson says conditions are a mixed blessing.

"Nasty for the high country and also good news also 10 to 20cm of snow is going to be very welcome for the ski resorts, no doubt about it.," he said.

"And those snow showers should continue up there probably at least until Thursday which is good news.

"For the remainder of the Monaro, certainly at least 5mm tomorrow, maybe up to 10mm.

" For the south coast just a shower or two coming through with very little in it as you'd expect when the winds come from the west."
