VIC - Strong cold front: March. 29-30

Post by hillybilly »

Next system looms with a strong cold front approaching on Wednesday and moving through most of Vic for Thursday. Looks very warm ahead of the front, then cold behind. 850Ts drop to near 0C so should see the odd flurry in the alps and could well see the odd frost around in lower spots by Friday. Could mark the proper start to more normal autumn weather :D

The system lacks a decent infeed so will mostly be showery and confined to the ranges and coast. Thinking we could well see the odd coldie with Bay and Bass Strait still very warm following our record hot start to March.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the odd 10 to 20mm fall, but most spots will get much less.

Progs not much changed. Solid front, with perhaps slightly increased rainfall overall.

Back to a monster blocking high next week. Hopefully this one doesn't last a month.

With cyclone Debbie making landfall in QLD I'm not prepared to make a forecast for the next week for here or anywhere on the Eastern half of Australia. These things can change weather patterns acrss the whole country very quickly.

Boy is Hamilton Island feeling the very full effect of this cyclone. Sustained winds of 150km/h and a gust of 222km/h so far. I pray for the people.

Everything else is irrelevant.

Crazy temps being recorded there too atm on Hamilton Island. ie. 32c with 100% humidity. I suspect the cyclone might be corrupting the gauges. Or they're underwater....

One good thing - it'll cool down some of the reef a bit.

Edit: Hamilton island gauge now reading 36c. It has to be corrupted.

Yep, temps went bad at Hamilton Island. We've seen that before in severe cyclones. Probably a combination of wind, rain and vibration (don't know the mix). Amazing the instruments mainly held up. The vane appears to have been blow off (hence direction went bad).

That TC has been unbelievable. Progs picked its impact about five days out and intensity too. Track looks pretty straightforward moving down though Queensland just inland next few days. Pops out the coast near the Sunshine Coast as a very strong low on Friday :o Be interesting if Debbie has a different plan. It then becomes the low in our next big block.

Our front looks basically unchanged. Showers increasing from the west tomorrow arvo.

Top of 24c yesterday, a little more than expected, similar today. Not much rain again in this one for me, looks like my driest start to the year since 2009. Freezing levels dropping to around 1700 / 1800m tomorrow, which will make those showers going over the balmy Port Philip bay waters interesting. A few coldies and maybe a couple of water spouts ;)

22c and quite a gusty northerly here. Sat Pic looking impressive with a tonne of cold air behind that front coming up.

A nice 646mm 24 hour total west of Mackay this morning. You will need a water pump to empty a manual gauge in that region today.

On March 2nd, I took a snapshot a GFS model run that showed a very cold upper parcel of air was heading north towards the equator through Victoria to Queensland on March 13th. We didn't get too affected here but this cold upper push, kicked off the Tasman low that belted NSW and NZ and stirred the atmosphere over the coral sea, which kicked off TC Debbie. Models obviously don't get a lot right but this was the canary in the mine for what has happened and is still unfolding for eastern Australia and NZ over the last 2 weeks..... IMO

Really Mick? It all looks a bit pathetic on the radar so far.
Satellite image does hold out some promise of a decent cold pool following on behind.

Might be something on the way, Geelong dropped almost 10c in half an hour. Sitting under the mosquito net waiting for the action.

Not much happening here. A little breezy and yes, obviously cooler now. Light rain not too far away by the look of it.

Temp just plummeted from a balmy 20C to 11C in minutes. Fog now in FC.

Looks like a decent band of showers building on the radar for tonight. Hoping we get a decent drop to round out March.

Sneaky follow-up front for Saturday might be worth another mm or two, then back to a big-fat-stubborn H.I.G.H. Going to be a dry start to April.

Temperature also plummeted not long ago here. We reached 25.3 today, and it's currently 11.6. Looks like a few showers on its way, will probably be here in the next 20-30 mins. The system is moving quite quickly.
