I have just done some research and have discovered that in the past 12 months (August 2010 to July 2011) Melbourne has received 981mm!! which is phenominal!! I went and compared this to the wettest Year on record which was 1916 for Melbourne and we have beaten it by 14mm 967mm fell in 1916 and 977mm fell from August 1916 to July 1917!! Strangely enough the start of 1916 and 1917 were both fairly dry or just below average rainfall so to think we have just beaten the whole of 1916 (Melbournes wettest Year on record) OR any 12 month period between 1916 and 1917 is just remarkable!!
I will do some further research and see if any 12 month period in the 50's, 70's and early 90's was wetter in Melbourne compare to the past 12 months but I would say at this stage it is more than likely to be no considering I have just compared the past 12 months to the wettest Year on record (1916)
Will get back to you guys once I have concluded my research
Your right Dry all those periods that you mentioned in the 50's are spot on as well as those 12 months in 1934 and 1935 just checked myself then so well done for obtaining that info. So looks like it is not the wettest 12 month period on record but still comes in the top 5 and still wetter than anything around 1916 and 17 period and the 70's 7 early-mid 90's after checking late last night, still a great achievment
Blimey dry, if Johnno's a star you must be a superstar! Great work! Good to keep old Johnno on his toes though, I reckon!
Could it be if we get a very wet August we will beat the record for that 12 months?
Thanks Geoff. We will need a record breaking August to beat that record!
To make a new 12 month rainfall record (Sep 2010 to Aug 2011), it will need to rain about 151mm. Given the wettest August on record is around 111mm - that is a tough ask!
