Poowong!!! Funny name. Lily this site has a lot of interesting info for Australia http://www.ga.gov.au/earthquakes/
Interesting fact: There are on average 200 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or more in Australia each year. Earthquakes above magnitude 5.5, such as the 5.6 magnitude event in Newcastle in 1989, occur on average every two years. About every five years there is a potentially disastrous earthquake of magnitude 6.0 or more.

Adelaide has the highest earthquake hazard of any Australian capital. It has experienced more medium-sized earthquakes in the past 50 years than any capital because South Australia is being slowly squeezed sideways by about 0.1mm/yr. Although earthquakes cannot be predicted accurately, measuring these changes and combining that information with Adelaide's earthquake history helps to develop an understanding of when the next big earthquake might happen.

Australia's largest recorded earthquake was in 1941 at Meeberrie in Western Australia with an estimated magnitude of 7.2 but it occurred in a remote, largely unpopulated area. A magnitude 6.8 earthquake at Meckering in 1968 caused extensive damage to buildings and was felt over most of southern Western Australia. Earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or more are relatively common in Western Australia with one occurring approximately every five years in the Meckering region.

Thanks crikey, that's great info.

I was living in Sydney at the time of the Newcastle earthquake. I must say that is one of the worst I have been in. I was on the phone to a friend who lived in a caravan half way between Newcastle and Sydney. The epicentre was Newcastle and my friend told me someone was rocking the caravan and probably about 10 seconds later the house I was in was rocking so it certainly didn't take long to travel.

What about the penguins? There are about 3 million of them there. I guess being out in the open they'd be ok.

lol crikey well my next adventures are
August - Broome, Derby WA
October - Queenstown NZ
November - NZ south and north island
December - Tasmania

so don't go to any of those places. My sister is the same as me. She flew into Vancouver on 9/11. That was a story and a half. When I went to Canada in May 2006 with her we were on the Rocky Mountaineer and it derailed for the first time in history. She was injured but I was OK. I could go on ..................

Very interesting reading guys, thanks for all the information. Dad used to live in Gippsland when he was younger, and told me that he frequently used to be able to feel tremors, but nothing exceptionally large. Interesting stuff though, no damage which is good.

Jake I recall feeling one many moons ago in Terang when we lived there, maybe 35 years ago.
The last one had the most movement I have felt out of the about 4 over the years.
