Max of 7C here today. Cool, damp winters day :D

Tomorrow looks like a repeat.

BTW EC starting to show another possible low level snow event for Monday next week. Precip is not as heavy, but snow levels are similar to last weekend. Too far out to get to excited, but something to watch.

Have to say that I am not surprised :D There have been persistent waxing / waning quasi stationary heating anomalies above Antarctica and mid latitudes over the last few weeks, with a few short lived Polar Vortex splits (apart from the big splits leading to July's and last weekends big cold outbreaks). Eg:

GFS have a weakish LWT going through On Sunday:

It’s odd because GFS doesn’t look that strong but the air is very cold with 850Ts down to -5C locally. That’s typically snow to 500m or less. Might all disappear on the next run ;)

From my take on things, there must still be heaps of cold Antarctic air "waiting in the wings" for an LWT to push north, so even a weak LWT might still push some northward?

Gordon wrote: Tue Aug 13, 2019 4:16 pm Finally went back and checked my snow records for this location (since 1997). It's been really interesting... well, at least for me :).

Only including 'snow days' when snow settled (as opposed to fell but didn't settle):

- We've had at least one snow day every year except 2006 and 2009.
- Before this year, we've had two other years with 4 snow days, being 2000 and 2008.
- We've had 9 years where there was two or more snow days.

So the current event was very unusual for us (once a decade?) but not unprecedented.
Great stats and record keeping Gordon. Thanks for sharing ;)

Trove with keyword “snow” and placename such a Ballarat is an amazing resource (e.g., Google “Trove snow Ballarat”). It’s clear that the newspapers have had a long interest in extreme weather. September 1905 sounds like a doozie in your region Gordon with six inches in Ballarat and depths of several feet in surrounding districts.

Here I’d put Saturday and Sunday as both about a one in ten year event since the mid 2000s. In the 1990s more like a n every second year event. The recent lack of snowfalls has been pretty stark, particularly given we’ve had a few good cold outbreaks, but completely missed the precip. The last good snowfall was 2008, but in the years since then we had at least half a dozen very cold systems which just failed to deliver good snow here for no obvious reason (other than bad luck?).

Foggy and rainy morning in the Nongs :) Odd that there is a light band of rain coming in from the north, even though we are basically sat under a high. Must be a weak upper trough aloft to our near west.

Just on 4mm in the gauge.

EC starting to loose interest in a big cold outbreak for Monday :( though still a strong front. Looks like Sunday could well see widespread 20s, though a fair bit depends on the timing on the change and rain/cloud.

Yeah thanks for that info re Trove DJ.
Found this article from 29-7-1882.
THE SNOW STORM.
On Wednesday snow fell in Melbourne
and suburbs, and caused a good deal of
excitement. The early morning (the Daily
Telegraph reports) was bitterly cold, and
shortly before 8 o'clock a few flakes of
snow descended. Three hours latter there
was a thick fall, which extended over some
minutes, and greatly surprised everybody.
Such a spectacle was quite new in Mel-
bourne, and people gazed in astonishment
at the fallen flakes. The hearts of those
whose early years were passed in the old
country warmed at the sight of that which
so unexpectedly brought memories of the
past to them, while the native-born popu-
lation looked in astonishment at the
" beautiful snow," of which they had heard
much. The day continued bitterly cold,
and hail fell on several occasions. It is
close upon forty years since a previous fall
of snow was witnessed in the City.
On the same day, at Ballarat, there was the
heaviest fall of snow that had occurred up
to the time in the district. After snowing
off and on almost all through the night, at
about half-past 8 it conmmenced to fall
very heavily, and by 11 o'clock as far as
the eye could reach nothing but one vast
expanse of white met the eye. All the
houses, hills, streets, fields, trees, vehicles,
and, in fact, everything out of doors, was
enveloped in a snowy fleece, and when the
sun, breaking forth for a momentary gleam,
shone upon the scene, the sight was one
that the like, perhaps, never was seen in
Ballarat before, and never will again. All
business at the Corner, and, in fact, almost
everywhere, was "put out of joint" and all,
both young and old, gave themselves up to

snowballing. Many persons mounted the
verandahs and roofs of the houses, and
carried on a sort of fusilade upon the
passers-by. Towards evening the melted
snow made the streets very wet, and al-
though the snow at times fell heavily, on
account of the wet ground it did not lodge
to any great depth. At midday, about 4in.
thick was the average depth in the town,
while at Bungaree it was stated to be 1ft.
and 14in. deep in some places. Numerous
widows and lamps came to grief, and in
many instances ludicrous scenes occurred
though the "butt" of of snowballer
losing his temper and "going for" his
assailants.

Days of gloomy overcast skies so far this week.

Anyway, time to start a new thread for the next big cold front on Sunday....
