Twitter video from the CBD showing just how intense the rain was from 30 odd stories up.

Another burst of heavy rain and frequent lightning/thunder here in Cheltenham. Amazing few storms! Seems to be easing off now and clearing out to the east. Was fun while it lasted :D

By the way, great video Stevco! You did well!
James wrote: Wed Jan 30, 2019 6:41 pm rumbling thunder in the distance...but cant see much lightning

is more likely to reform later? be nice to see it in the dark!
I wouldn't say likely, but certainly possible. As Jasmine points out above, the wind change is still sitting to the west of Geelong and Ballarat and shouldn't begin to reach the Melbourne region until around 8:30pm-9:30pm judging by latest obs. Between then and now, always a chance further development may occur.

Also ... warm welcome to a new user, mccann25! Good to have you on the forum :)

3mm here, lots of rumbles with one purple close CG. Out watering the garden in the spitting rain as I do most nights and trying not to get bitten by mosquitoes. Wet bush here needs a drink but alas not this time.

Just managed 1mm in the Nylex at.home. Not even enough to wet a sloping driveway under a tree.

3.4mm here so far. Pretty diapppointing. 7mm is about the minimum to give a typical forest a drink so flash drought continues.

Trough is still west so maybe more to come.

Storms moved through earlier than models anticipated, so not sure whether that means further development or they got the timing wrong :?:

Good to see some locally heavy falls. Need it with another hot week ahead for Vic

Fires out east running, and another significant one started northwest of the Latrobe Valley. Thompson Fire now about 3000 hectares :?

They said raining on and off until around midnight on the news.

Can see some more cells developing out west, but not sure whether they'll take. Quite cool now.

Who knows :)

Quite surprised you did so poorly. Stevco and I must've been in the sweet spots because totals are quite low north and south. I was expecting 30mm plus up and down the bay given the sheer intensity felt here. Still, shows what's possible atm when a trigger is there.

Lots of moisture in the mid levels of the troposphere currently east of trough which is still around Geelong, Ballarat, Donald (7pm). Big temperatures differences between the layers as well. This could pop again anywhere east of the trough IMO. I see Melbourne OP and Moorabbin have 20c dew points at 7.20pm.

6mm here, 10mm plus a few kms away. Nice to more than double our January total & have a break from the dust.

In the end we exceeded the forecast rainfall for the first time in weeks (usually it just fades to nothing as the event approaches). Could this be a change in the pattern at last?

Great day 39c gusty winds then stroms so good.

3 stroms came through,
1st strom quick burst of heavy rain from high based cell that looked to intesify as moved SE then was crazy humid after with a few big rumbles with TS
2nd cell had small hail with it that was a surpise big rumbles strong winds and driving rain with local minor street flooding
3rd strom just missed to the south but amazing bolt fest so many bolts with it and a number of close flangs more steady rain with it

Now 26/21c with a few more showers and possible rumbles likley

I JUST LOVE SPRING AND SUMMER

PS Insane rain in FNQ some places 500mm+ in 24 hours and 3-5 days total in the 500 to 800 range nuts with loads more to come.

6mm in the Nylex
Bring on the heat and stroms

Interesting to note that it's still rather hot out West (ie. Horsham is 34c.) And just 23c and humid here. Actual cold change is a long way away still.

Northerly winds really picking up here now. Radar also starting to look mildly interesting. Low level humidity is excellent, uppers and mid levels unstable but system working against a sun going down and a bit of stable air behind the first round of storms.

Wind change looks to be about at Geelong and is very slow moving, and not expected for about four more hours here (going off EC).

Btw should see some showers with the change proper. This one’s almost cold, with snow likely for higher parts of Tasmania. We don’t quite get the cold air, but it gets almost chilly for a while.

Lets hope Tassie gets some decent rain, the fires are out of control.

A few good storms here this afternoon. Nothing dramatic but plenty of thunder and lightning, and a new storm currently moving in. 7.2mm so far. Will still be well below average for January, but it's a welcome relief and a case of taking anything we can get!
