Growing cell inbound. Getting frequent rumbles to my near north. It should miss from here

Falls locally around 20mm near Ringwood. Shame city in inner burbs look to have missed out.

The Australian Open officials put a curse on by shutting the roof tonight at Rod Laver. :P

Well that was quite an intense thunderstorm!

Was at the control centre tonight and we were watching the storms coming down around Sunbury area, caused a couple of issues just before 10pm, then I noticed the cells popping up around Moorabbin/Cheltenham area and said there will be problems down there. Low and behold, a couple of issues presented themselves. Fortunately I finished at 10pm.

Managed to watch that complex explode as I was heading south on the Nepean Highway from the city to home. Hit Highett and it just started pouring, some of the most intense rain I’ve witnessed in a long time. And the lightning, my goodness there were flashes every few seconds. Witnessed plenty of CGs, so that was awesome. One of the best lightning active storms in a long time.

The rain has cleared here in Cheltenham a short time ago. Bit of minor flash flooding around. Can still hear plenty of thunder and see the lightning flashing away.

Wouldn’t rule out further development overnight as it’s quite unstable, though I’d say most of the action is over. As HB mentioned, not really much sign in the models for this one, very unexpected development overall. That’s not a bad thing though, hopefully a sign of the next few days. :)

Moderate to heavy rain here now with frequent thunder. Don’t expect a lot in it, but might scrape a garden watering 5-10mm.

Not a bad way to end a day which looked pretty iffy for most of Vic mid arvo :?

Obs suggest more than 50mm Bayside around Aspendale so anticipate a few issues given how flat it is. Elsewhere, expecting a lot of happy gardens and gardeners, trees and animals where the rain fell ;)

Here, here, so much so, I haven't fallen asleep. It's still going out west.

With all this sub tropical weather on the increase in recent years, how does one explain or even define our Climate to others?

Speaking for Melbourne when I say this, I would always define Melbourne as a dry heat in Summer... It seems completely at odds with that in recent years.

It really is a dry heat, most of the time. With occasional humid incursions when the wet season gets going up north. But perhaps humid events have become more frequent ?

Just 0.8mm from that storm.

Show was good but missed out by only 3 kilometres on the heavy rain.

Lyndhurst got about 30mm, and Dandenong South about the same.

Summer heat in Melbourne is generally dry, but we're no stranger to periods of warm, humid weather.

It would be nice if humid, wet weather became a feature in the future - brown rot aside..

Happy Australia day!

Here are some screen shots for the thread records from that eruption around the Bay.

Ding Ding, round 2 coming up and it looks like atmospheric dynamite to me on the 12z runs so far. Total Totals on the Access R run are going over 55 in the eastern suburbs of Metro along with widespread over 50's across central Vic and K index's on GFS are in the 40's across central areas.... goodness me!! ....this is way bigger than yesterday if they are right. I'm waiting for the EC numbers now....if EC is big, the BoM might as well issue warnings now.

Hope some landed on my garden @ Boronia.
Seems to have been something over night @ Lakes as every thing is damp again. Could hear dripping at 4.30am. Although 24 hours without thunder so far.

Lots of flashes and thunder here but not much rain, 2mm, was expecting more with all that action. Getting ready for round two.
