Hillybilly said - One would expect our summer to become more subtropical as the oceans warm and the highs move further south but this would not easily explain the more rapid year-to-year changes. One thing that is clear is our summer are becoming more easterly (which would tend to increase the supply of moisture for storms when they do happen).
Yes I've seen that happening over the years. When I moved from Sydney to Melbourne in 1985 I noticed Sydney summers becoming more tropical like Queensland and its been happening for quite a few years now here reminding me of Sydney

Lovely sunny day today. We had 0.6mm yesterday in that little band of showers that went through around lunch time. Currently 16.5c, but feeling warmer in the sun. We've finished up the month with 106mm, so a fairly wet one overall, mainly thanks to the heavy rain at the start of the month.

Total rainfall for the year here was 798.4mm. A few other stats:
Driest month - June: 18.4mm
Wettest month - April: 170.1mm
Coldest morning - 2nd July: -1.6c minimum
Coldest day - 27th August: 7.5c maximum
Hottest day - 17th January: 38.0c

Definitely noticed the trend toward an easterly flow in summer, especially over the past ten years or so. The hot days seem to be coming from the northeast more often these days with accompanying humidity, and less so from the northwest.

Such disgusting temperatures. Melbourne is likely to reach 40 this summer, which is a shame really, because it's been nice without that kind of heat for a little while.

Yes no 40c degree days this year in Melbourne, so almost certain to be at least one
before the end of the summer.

Finished the year with 727.5mm. Hoped to comfortably beat our average of 780mm with December storms but the dreaded La Nina pattern of most summer rainbands/ storms passing just to the east of us continues. (Give me a good negative IOD any day :))

It was quite a good year for snow days (when it snowed properly). We had five, though they were later (all in August and September) and we only had one day - 4 September - when snow settled properly. Roll on 2018!
