It's playing catch up. First it started off as a very dismal winter with avergae temps and no real cold weather, and now it just lingers.
Feels like mid July, just look at the current temps and the maximums for today.
Unusual for us, late-August this year has been colder than the first half. Another 11 degC max today.
While we will likely see a max temp in the high teens on Saturday, it looks like another Antarctic blast could be on the cards next week. It might even be the coldest one yet....
Yes Strato, the grand daddy of all Polar vortex pulses is on its way for next week according to the big models. Access and GFS are definitely onboard but the latest EC 00z is an Ice age. Sea level snow if that comes off. It's powered by a three pronged polar gyre that has a barrage of attacking troughs from Antarctica It looks a bit like the July 12th, 13th set up from 2016. Its still a week out but it almost needs its own thread.
5.4C for a max here today. Classic winter weather. Good frost early with even a bit of ice on the garden ponds so best of the year here. The min at the top of our block was 1.9C, but looks like about zero at the lower parts.
Observations show Mount Hotham has just had its coldest temperature on record. -10.4, compared with the old record of -10.0, recorded on 26 July 1986, the day it snowed in the CBD and at sea level coincidentally.
Melbourne airport sounding showed an 850T of -4.9C which is a new site record (though its record is only about 15 years). Previous record is -4.8C in 2015. The Laverton site saw a -6.3C in 1986 (when it snowed in the city) so not a long run record. In someways bit unlucky not to have seen more extensive low level snow given the numbers yesterday Would put it down to the showers being quite feeble so not able to drag down the snow level as low as events such as August 2008 which saw settled snow to about 300m.
Actually got a very brief small hail shower on Sunday, in between some large-ish gusts of wind and some sheets of rain. Quite impressive for late August.
Was up at Mt Buller today, couldn't have asked for better weather - sun all afternoon and some squeaky snow in patches. That dusting of snow yesterday certainly helped. Even the north side had mostly decent cover.
A genuine hilltop 0C at 8 am this morning with ice everywhere. Frosts usually correspond to 1-2C on our thermometer with the coldest air at ground level, but this was with wind and cloud. Impressively cold air!
Also discovered the limitations of the Broadmeadows Radar today with a heavy afternoon shower (2mm worth) failing to register at all - not even a fleeting white smudge .

Same thing here about 2pm. And last Saturday night's downpour only showed as a speckle of white on the radar.
Great pictures of the snow around your place Macedonian.
We had another 2.4mm here today with a top of 8.3c and a low of 2.6c this morning. Feeling lovely and wintry, and quite a contrast to June/July. The ground is sodden after a lot of soaking rain this month. Even the lawn is barely walkable as it has become very muddy underneath.
A foggy spitty morning in Ferny Creek. Added 0.4mm to the event. Not that cold - was near 5C overnight.
Little front sneaking around the incoming high for today. Thinking mayne a couple of mm's to finish the event and month off.
Frustratingly we are going to end about 10mm below average, which will make 4 months in a row. Unlucky as it's been a good month for most of Vic except central areas and East Gippsland.
Don't have a better spot to put it but I just checked the average nights below 0 degrees for here. The average is 17.7, yesterday morning we had our 32nd sub-zero temperature for the year. I thought it had been cold
Scored 2mm today, pretty much as expected. Now comes a cold night, then a few sunny days.

Pockets of the inland southeast will have close to record cold nights for winter. A combination of a very dry June with huge highs and then an August with lots of SW'ly flow. We've had a huge high anchored south of Perth for quite sometime so getting colder flow. Has felt like an old style winter the last month or two.
