Decently heavy rain, but still yet to cop anything substantial. 5mm here, 7mm there. Been a while since it's truly rained.
Brilliant blues skies at the moment and the temp has spiked. Thankfully, the wind has stopped, but I was hoping for some more blustery, on and off downpours.
Hopefully we get some more showers, but won't count on it.
Just in 3mm here today. Had brief shower this morning. Was odd as it was splattered flakes, but temperature was 4.5C at the time. Must have been decent down drafts as those temps are pretty marginal for it here. Rainwise pretty disappointing as as EC had 12mm here today.
Made it up to Mount Donna Buang. Was about 5cm at the top, maybe 10cm in spots and snowing pretty consistently. Got very heavy for a while. Snow was falling to about 700m with slushy rain to about 500m. A few photos below. Traffic was mayhem with lots of 2wd without chains
"The Great Apline Road has been closed between Harrietville and Hotham Heights due to heavy snow falls. The road will remain closed until it is cleared with snow clearing machinery"
Looks like the heavy snow predictions have come to pass at Hotham at least.
Apparently about 40cm has fallen at Hotham today alone! All the lifts were closed due to thundersnow concerns. The road to Falls Creek is closed as well.
@Blackie, plenty more come on the rain and snow for the NE in the next 24 hours.
@HB, great pics of Donna
This double headed gyre is spinning some magic at the moment. Outer bands racking up the totals up here. I'm keeping a close eye on this polar trough launching an attack through western Bass strait from the southern cold core. This baby might drop cm's more snow in the early hours in the Macedon Ranges down to 600 to 700m
Melbourne was always going to struggle. The system had no tropical infeed and peaked to our west. We very rarely do well in winter nwly flow as they are cold and what moisture there is gets wrung out over the ranges. This was always going to be a northern slopes, northeast ranges and southwest coast system. In the alps it's probably been the best snow producer in a few years (people are suggesting 2010, but not sure whether a that's optimistic or not).
Melbourne should pick up a bit on the backside of the low. I'd hope for at least 15mm here the next 36 hours.
Getting a heavy shower ATM but again mainly missing us and headed for the Upper Yarra Valley. Being out at Warburton today was remarkable how dry things are from about Mt Evelyn to about Launching Place, then from there it was sodden with lots of water running down the side of the hills. Just repeated misses for much of central Vic
34mm for the thread so far. Currently 4.5c with the wrap around south westerly flow moving in. At these temps I think maybe a bit of sleet for here, above 700m will be a good chance this morning for more snow in the Macedon Ranges.
Interesting to see what happens around the Dandenongs with the SW flow coming in this morning.
Pouring up here ATM with thick fog. Temperature is 3.5C and dropping so expect to see some sleet soon. Be very surprised if it was to get cold enough for snow here, but have fingers crossed.
6mm for the last 24 hours and just a tad under 20mm for the event. Hope to double that today. Is worryingly dry here ATM (feels like the driest here since 2009), so really really need something significant.
Epic snowfalls in the alps. Looks like a metre or thereabouts across most the major resorts for the date range. Would probably put this as a once every few years event up there. Spencer's Creek in the Snowys will be interesting on Thursday as the event has basically all fallen between Thursdays so the total will give a good guide as to how much has accumulated.
There was a bit of sleety stuff on my windscreen going through Olinda at 11am, temp was 4C at the time, now up to 5.4C.
Not surprised. Unfortunately I left home this morning between showers so didn't get to see whether it was sleeting or not. Expect it would have at times.
Looks like out max today has been 5.5C which is certainly chilly (nothing close to a record, but more like something you might get a few times a winter).
Have added 10mm to our event total so far today so edging up... only a shower or two shy of 30mm now.
Went for a bit of a drive around the central ranges today. Wasn't much precipitation of any kind, most showers were skirting the Macedon area. Was sleeting and hailing at the top of Macedon at around 2:30 on the edge of a shower, no doubt it would have snowed on the back end of a heavy shower. Pea-sized hail in Moonee Ponds just before dropping 4mm in about 5 minutes. Can assume the yellow echos in the Melbourne area are indicating hail.
