Glad I'm at 527m ASL - Old Melbourne is not going to cool down much. Given the high cloud, northerly and current temps - Melbourne might give the January all time overnight record a nudge tonight. 28.8c is the record and latest GFS run and BoM thinks its a good chance.

I reckon it'll get down to about 24 to 26 in the city.

Just hasn't got that feeling to it to be a 28 degree night.

The suburbs will be cooler ofcourse.

Last night i was expecting a min of about 21 here but it got down to 16

Looking at the latest GFS run, it seems to think the overnight min will come around midnight, then the northerly will take the temp back up. There will be a lot of cranky Victorians tomorrow morning :)

Definitely a warm night. Even Cape Otway (as an example ) went from 23 at 8pm to 29 at 11

It certainly was a warm one. 22.7c overnight low here which is as warm as it get at 527 ASL overnight. I see Moorabbin didn't get under 29c and the city 28c. BoM and GFS were spot on.

Just took another little peek at the week of Jan 16th to Jan 22nd, this time through the eyes of EC. Interesting .... :) http://www.theaustralianweatherforum.co ... 183#p98183

Hot night here, struggled down to 24C after a max of 32C. Pretty standard summer stinker here. Spend the arvo in the pool, after fixing fences in the morning :o

Winds been quite bad this morning making a big mess in the garden (gums are dropping leaves fast).

Not seeing any rain on the change... all virga.

Upper trough will trigger a weak rainband tomorrow. Looks like good falls in the northeast, and probably a bit in north central. Elsewhere models been pretty inconsistent. Latest EC has a couple of mms through central areas, while ACCESS has us in the high gradient region between zilch and 5 to 10mm.

Probably time for a new thread for another warm to hot week with a couple of troughs.

Change through here about 20 minutes ago. More like a seabreeze change.
Temperature has only dropped one degree so far.

Still stinking hot here. That southerly change must be only doing 40 km/h up the Calder. Currently 35.5c and rising with a dirty North Westerly... this will be my hottest day of the thread. The dog barometer has currently got the panting tongue at nearly full extension.

I'd love to know where Dean Stewart from the BOM is getting his stats from - he says in this article that Melbourne recorded 30.6C as a record overnight minimum on 30/01/2010 - I actually have no idea what he is talking about - neither the old Melb Regional office site which was open at the time nor Melbourne Airport recorded any such temperature??

Looking back at my own records which go back to 2002.
The warmest night I ever recorded was 28.8c on the 12th of January 2010.
maybe that was the date not the 30th.
BTW got down to 24.7c here last night.

Confirmed that it was the 12th.
Some sites had their lowest January temperature on record. Some sites had their highest January daily minimum temperature on record. Melbourne's overnight (11th/12th) minimum temperature of 30.6°C equalled the all-time "warmest night" record (for any month), which was set during the night of 31 January/1 February 1902.
That's from the BOM site.

Topped out at 36.6c and now a pleasant 31c. Don't often get 3 days in a row over 35c here..... it's drying out fast now. Need a cool, slow soaker event soon and looking at the latest GFS run for Jan 17th, it's a worry for up here at the moment. http://www.theaustralianweatherforum.co ... 195#p98195

Certainly a complicated looking cool change.
Southerly coming up from Melbourne and the bay
and a westerly moving in across the western districts.

Is it just the sea breeze making the southerly stronger
or is there a topographical thing happening?
The southerly seems to be winning and pushing the westerly back.

Anyway going to cool down which is good.

Cheers Chris

Change well and truly here for the last hour or two, temp back to low 20s with a south-easterly.

Liking the look of a week with no 30s for us on the latest BOM forecast.

Finally feeling cool up here now. Took all day for the change to properly chill things off. Still humid. Thinking we will probably get fog here over night.

Hot night for 20 years in Melbourne. The 30C is an overnight minimum, not a 24 hour minimum which can create a bit of confusion :?

Weak rainband tomorrow. May or may not sneak over Melbourne. Looks close, but mainly north of us :x
