Re: VIC: Significant Inland Rain Event Aug 30 - Sept 2

Post by hillybilly »

Been raining proper since 5pm. Now up to 9mm.
Starting to pile up decent totals in north central areas which is good. The large dams are still quite low in that region, so hopefully some good runoff.

In FC been a day with on/off rain. Had almost 4mm so far. All has fallen in bounce rainfall in the lee of the ranges. Got more rain building now so should add some more soon.

Some impressive storms back through SA with the upper trough, including some decent hail around parts of Adelaide.

Looks like the second low will likely impact the eastern parts of Vic, but mainly miss central areas. Could change, though, with the event a few days out.

18mm now. Rain has backed off.

Interesting line of storms along S.A border. I wonder if they'll make it this far?

8mm in FC this morning. Sorta split the difference between EC and GFS. Big rainshadow in much of central Vic... one of the strongest I've seen in a while :o Went bed expecting a lot more locally looking at the radar, but not to be.

Substantial falls of warm rain in the alps and northern slopes. Must be a lot of runoff happening, and the snow cover has been hit hard :? Too early for a big snow season washout

Westerly front due middle of the day which should spark up showers and storms, then a trough for us tomorrow with more showers. Should add up a bit.

My attempt at reverse psychology did not work, 8mm for us.
Much better falls to the east and northeast,
luck of the draw I suppose.
We were always on the edge of the better totals
I am not talking about the next system until after it happens.
Cheers Chris

3mm here. Mostly, we've done surprisingly well with rain from the north this winter, but the last 24 hours we too have been well & truly in the shadow of the Divide.

Much better falls just a few kms away.

We did quite well and managed 23mm. Probably nothing now until late next week by the looks of it.

21mm here, not bad at all, and just about what was expected for here. Local stream rises and big muddy puddles again. A lot more rain in the North East with the usual suspect, Mount Buffalo, with 104mm, that'll be big trouble for the Kiewa and Ovens rivers I suspect with already high runoff combined with snow melt up there.

I'm not expecting too much more for the rest of this week, maybe 5mm or so, before the next dry and rather warm stretch beginning on Sunday.

4.8mm's up to 9am. So finished on 78.8mm's (ave 78.0mm's) for the month.
Few showers and Storms on the radar, but all trailing away to the east of here (Cranbourne)
Pakenham seems to be in the firing line at the moment.

Pretty solid line of showers/storms from up near Yan Yean all the way down past Warragul, solid apart from one small gap - right over us!

Well we managed to pick gaps on all the showers today. Just a light dibble. Just south of us was a band of 4-10mm with brief hail running from Ferntree Gully out through Belgrave Heighs. Missed us by... about... 3km

Been a pretty ordinary sequence for us. Just 8mm so far.

August ended on 150mm for us which is a good result and our first winter in years where all three months were above average here (we got lucky last week with storms so a bit of an outlier).

Pretty good winter for Vic too (unless your near Eildon or Mildura).

Not much here. Few mms, enough to replace evap.

Last spring was pretty average here. Lost the lawn by late October. Can see the same thing happening this year. BDHs look to be dominating straight up. In VIC anyway.

However, despite the measly totals, there were lots of them, so we cracked average at least, 5-10mms at a time.

That would be right, wouldn't it?
Showers developing on the radar south east of here, heading for Melbourne.
Probably develop in to a raging storm.

Radar showing some nice cores to those cells northwest of Melbourne. Some spots will clock up decent totals in quick time. The steering is quite good for central areas coming out of the northwest in the mid levels.

Well I was only saying to the wife yesterday that the sky had a "Springtime" look about it, and here we are with torrential showers and hail, absolute cloudburst here at the moment.
Yesterday's forecast was for showers and thunderstorms and we got almost nothing. Today's forecast was for a shower or two and we're under siege! :D

Picked up just over 10mm from those showers. That was a surprise :D Mt Dandy scored over 20mm (guess that's a double surprise).

Looks like the next part will mainly affect eastern and northeastern areas.

15mm here from that downpour yesterday, so a quickfire start to spring.
August total was 125mm taking our YTD to 837mm. It's going very well here so far, despite a lot of events going all around us. :D
