Ive never been to the friday show as it is a shortened show and given the price is the same, didnt think it was good value.

People have told me it was good when the F111 did the dump and burn in the dark, but since they are retired, thats out. They do have a few gliders and things with flares attached. Ive never seen a pic posted from Avalon in the dark.

If you just want to look I spose it would be good, but if you want to take pics, a bit hard. If you are on PT, you will be lucky to be home by midnight, 5 hours s;eep and back on the PT again, if you have a car, Id go and sleep in it so you have an early start for the saturday. Sometimes latre arrivals land in the wee hours of saturday morning, so you would see any of them if you stayed overnight.

You could forgo the friday and spend the hunderd bucks you will save on the grouse, grouse quality US Tshirts and a few patches. They usually sell the Ts for 20 bucks and they are fantastic souveniers. I get the Yanks that sell em, to sign em, great fun, they love that kinda thing. They also just love it when you simply say "thankyou for your service" I always make a point of shaking each hand and saying that. People ask em all sorts of questions, but few bother to say thanks. They cop a lot of flack around the world, so just love being in a friendly country.

Umm, are tyou sure its safe to go up?

I kinda got a feeling we will be afected by another low from the tropics. It can do anything as long as the grass strip at YAVE is dry.

Will Huey throw up weather like today next weekend? Could life be so unkind? as unkind as metro trains will be?

Plenty of arrivals this weekend, the spotters will have pics up on monday I expect.

Rumour now is that F22 will land and depart in darkenss and be static only. ASDU aas usual saying nothing.

Also be warned the frankston line will be busses from franger to mordy next weekend, Thanks Metro trains, the busiest line on one of the busiest weekends, gotta hand it to metro trains, thanks for noting metro trains. All the metro trains to be sure the google bot finds this post and shames them into changing their plans.

They pick the worst times to do track works. I remember playing Geelong at the Etihad a few years back and we had to get Buses to moorabbin which is just a pain. I will definetly be going Friday and by the looks of the forecast i will go Sunday aswell. Hopefully Sunday doesnt change!
Does anyone here know how busy the Princess freeway is around 12-1:30PM on fridays. Trying to work out when i should leave for the Friday Show.

The people I know that have gone to the friday night show say you are better off having a sleep in the carpark for a couple of hours or by the side of the road after the show. If its a nice night, its bedlam. Going to the show is not nearly as bad as its a staggered start, I reckon you will be OK on the run down.

Yes saturday does not look good, but its pretty blowy down there, so I can only hope. The F22s should have just arrived. Cant wait to play with the 5D and 400mm WHITE AHH lens that I hired for the weekend.

Yeah USM = Ultra Sonic Motor for the focus, is that a 400mm prime lens?

Depending on how smooth you can pan, I wouldn't go any slower then 1/1000 sec shutter for the fast jets during most of the display unless lighting is a issue, you can use a lot slower shutter when they are taking off/landing or doing a slow pass but you need to keep the shutter up fairly high when they are coming towards you quick or changing direction etc. I always try to go no higher then 200 ISO to keep the quality high, the KC-10 shots above are at 1/400 sec F6.3 @ 400 ISO as theres not much light at that time of day.

I'd either use AV or TV mode on the 5D, AV is aperture priority so you can select your ISO and F stop and the camera will auto expose the shutter. TV mode is shutter priority where you select the ISO and shutter speed and the auto exposure controls the F stop. You will need to use a more centered metering mode where the aircraft will be for the auto exposure as light can vary so much for fast moving jets, I use 100% manual exposure and adjust the shutter and aperture on the fly as sometimes auto exposure can underexpose shots when working with bright backgrounds which is often the case with aircraft photography.

Thanks mate. I getcha, but I get slack. I have bailed outa work for the rest of the week coz the bloke next to me has a cold. better to lose a few days leave than be crook. Metering mode has been my downfall many a time with the 350d. Getting that to hold focus in the wrong mode is a pain, so will do some reading and thinking. Got 16gb of memory and 2 batteries plus the 350d that canon pretended to clean, it goes back on tuesday, its got a baby flea in the viewfinder, we dont have that species in Vic, it wasnt there when I sent it to be cleaned. I think its 400mm with a 1.4 extender, all beyond me its better than the kit 300mm lens, oh did I say its white? but I dont have a fishing jacket to go with it.

Those white lens blokes dont know what they are in for. I be the bloke that yells out "settings please" FSTOP, ISO! and if they dont reply, gunna be a long day. I think saturday I am going to roam, taking a chair for the first time in 20 years, thats a bonus, Im gunna chan it to a star picket. Sunday I will prop, choose the best end for the wind and make an effort and see if its been me all these years or the camera!

Ive been looking at pics wit the same set up n a coupla photography forums where the poster posts the pic details, very helpful. I reckon I got props down to a tee, I could get a few decent shots with the 350, but I am looking for a bit more this time, more depth.

The weather has worked out well so far. Looking good for the weekend, even tempted to go fri night!

Shot some AWESOME vid yesterday, but no stills. Some incredible aerobatics, and the 4 Hornet display was something else!! Have vid of them screaming in low formation overhead. The WWII warbird display was very Majestic. I will try and punch some stills from the vid.

Well I went, had a nice time, but wasnt much of a show. Long vacant gaps, some late puller outerers and a tame line up made it pretty average, but better than nothing.

I have found the 5D and white lens is no good in auto mode, I can hear Mr. Canon crying now, about me using auto mode. I took plenty in other modes so all should be good and some fine tuning for tomorrow and all will be good. Gunna be hot out there tomorrow.

I got some good piccies, but at 22mb a serve, dont know what to do with them just yet.

I'd say the F-22 will be at Avalon again next show and by then there should be more demo pilots (not just one like there currently is), thats what I'm hearing from the F-22 pilots/crew anyway.

Few pics from today

F-22's took off and then put on a steep climb, waited around for the tankers to take off and did a slow pass in formation.
Image

Lead B-1 on take off had the nose gear stuck down, it circled around Avalon fairly high with the gear down the whole time and landed back at Avalon after I left.
