Above The Rim - All things Basketball

Post by Blackee »

As you'll be starting to realise, I love my sport!!
I first starting playing Basketball when I was 5 years old and only stopped when my ankles couldn't take the rigors of 3 games a week plus training.
Basketball is an interesting sport in this country. Junior participation rates are always strong, yet we can't transfer this into a rock solid national league. Teams come and go, money is not good because of the lack of interest from sponsors and spectators. Gone are the days when Rod Laver arena was packed to the rafters when the Tigers played the Magic in the mid 90's. I think the impact of Michael Jordan was huge to this country, and his departure was a reason why interest dropped off.

Anyway, discuss all things Basketball in this thread. The NBL season has just finished with the Perth Wildcats becoming the most successful franchise in NBL history. The NBA is ramping up towards playoffs, with the Lakers and Cavs leading their Conferences. Special mention to our own Andrew Bogut, who was voted player of the week for the Eastern Conference. It is a massive achievement from a bloke who didn't play competitive hoops until his mid-teens.

Also, March signifies the US College Basketball tournament. NCAA "March Madness" is a favorite of mine. Great to see which youngsters will step up and increase their chance to be picked in the NBA Draft.

Agree with that. I think the NBL coming back onto free to air TV will be a good thing. I remember when we used to get the finals matches, live on Ch 10 back in the day.. Ahh the good old days of SE Melbourne Magic Vs the Tigers.

Must admit I prefer playing to watching. During footy season I cut down to one night a week, whereas over summer I play two nights a week.

Celtics have shocked Orlando @ Orlando to take a 2-0 lead in the best of 7 series.
Before game 1, the Magic were 8-0 in this years playoffs, however the Celtics, led by Paul Pierce, Ray Allen & Kevin Garnett have taught Dwight Howard & co a lesson. Can't see the Magic recovering from here.

In the Western Conference finals, Kobe Bryant torched the Suns yesterday in Game 1. Expect the Lakers to prevail in 6 to set-up an old school Lakers/Celtics finals.

Celtics now up 3-0, with Game 4 today at Boston.
Orlando look just a shadow of their regular & early post-season form.
Expecting the Celtics to get the broom out and sweep the Magic.

Yesterday, Amare Stoudamire breathed new life into the Suns/Lakers series with a career playoff high 42 points. LA now leads the series 2-1, with Game 4 @ Phoenix tomorrow.

Game 2 of the NBA Finals is on this morning, between Boston & LA Lakers. LA won Game 1 on the back of Kobe & Pau Gasol. Boston were in foul trouble throughout the game and should provide a tougher match today.

The Lakers turned up the heat in game 3 @ Boston, winning 91-84.
Ray Allen, Boston' hero in Game 2 went 0 for 13, including 0 for 8 from 3pt land.

LeBron James has decided to sign with the Miami Heat, leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers.

No love lost with the Owner of the Cavs coming out and giving a LeBron an almighty spray.
