Navigation & Threads

Hi,

It seems that recently we've taken a new direction in reporting storms and storm chasing activities. I'm a little confused as to what exactly is going on...? There's the day to day weather thread, there's the date / event specific thread in the vic breaking section, there's TU's storm chasing section (also broken down into date/event specific threds), then the straw that broke the camel's back - Rikki's report thread from last night.

It seems a bit silly to me to have to check five different forums to work out what the devil is going on!

Hi Schitz

With Rikki's thread, which you say broke the camel's back. He had a thread in his photography section as adding photos to the Storm chasing thread where reports were coming in would have made it a bit heavy as photos take download time and those people reporting in on iphones etc find the photos annoying when they just want to get to the gist of the discussion. Rikki's pics are always a must see tho as they are nothing short of spectacular and definitely need their own section.

Also in the past people have reported on the storm in the Vic Breaking section but that eventually gets lost in there, hence the special Stormchasing thread with TU where you can see reports at a glance without wading through the other thread which can go up to 100 pages

Anyway Sniper can probably explain this better than I can :)

Hey Ryan,
You make valid points. I pose the question to you (and other forum users). How would you like to see Severe Weather events being reported.

Will give an example: Black Saturday 2009.

One thread ended up being 300+pages. Hundreds of users & 1000's of guests being involved in the posting/reading of:

* Current observations
* Forecasts
* Photos
* Warnings
* People who are missing
etc etc

I fear that covering all of the above in one thread loses it's clarity. If it is a dynamic situation and you are posting a warning (which may take 1 minute) you could miss an entire page of posts/discussion etc.

There were several mentions in the Breaking Weather thread that detailed Storm Coverage was located in the Storm Chasing board (most with a link attached)

Last night was a good test of how things could work (or need change) should we have a similar event where a majority of the forum community could be affected.

Btw I have found that maxthon http://www.maxthon.com/ is an amazing web browser. You can open many windows and use your mouse to flick from one to the other. It has mouse movements like using an ipad/iphone that make your browsing so much easier and quicker.

I think 1-2 photos is fine, just to get a taste, then a link to the relevant photography thread.

I'm with you about Rikki's thread Rivergirl.

Wes, it's hard to say.. Perhaps a sticky might be the best bet? Sticky the relevant Storm discussion so that it's easily found in the relevant event section?

For example, the March 4th thread, which is 100 pages is an epic read as is now.
It's a wonderful archive of all of the anticipation, forecasting, the buildup, the event itself, the tension, the drama, the buzz, the crowd and the atmosphere.
If you're out on the road it's not too hard to check 2-3 pages back.
I fear that might be lost by diluting the event's specifics into their own threads.
It has a few pics and video links here and there, then this comes along.. Which in my view seals the deal and makes the whole discussion near perfect.
For someone like myself who is new to all of this, seeing how it all transpired during that sequence of events was brilliant fun.

Hello everyone.

Just a reminder that Hamlan has posted up some really fantastic panoramic photos, which were taken by himself and John Allen from the BIG chase weekend of 6th and 7th March in central and north central Vic and south central NSW the same weekend as the Melbourne hail storm.

You can see the pics in the storm chase section here: viewtopic.php?f=23&p=15157#p15157

And in the photography section here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=182&p=15140#p15140

I've been given word of some more great stuff to come as well.

This particular thread will be locked again in the next few days.
