Wait for the DVD release, and I saw the 2D one, not the 3D.

Just quickly, don't have enough time to right up much.

Avatar

Finally managed to see this on Tuesday at Hoytes in the Director Suite, second last screening I believe at the time. I saw the film in 3D. Personally, I am speechless regarding the entire film. FANTASTIC!!! It was one of the best, in-fact, most likely the BEST movie I have ever seen. The 3D graphical representation simply enhanced the action and feel for the movie. What a film, and since it's the best film I have ever seen, I have no other choice to rate it at a 10 out of 10. :P

Alice in Wonderland

Generally well placed, a little hard to understand the main characters at times, but overall, fairly good. In my opinion, graphical and visual look is fairly good, but as DE says, no where near as good as Avatar. For me, I rate this film 6 out of 10.

Managed to watch The Boondock Saints 2 last week, and have been hanging out to watch it since I loved the first movie.

As per sequels goes, the original movie was prolly the best with William Defoe being a witty Fed cop. But the second movie I wouldnt knock off since it had pretty much the same humour, main characters with the same actors portraying their roles in in the first movie. But also gave a insight more into the history of the characters and the relationships between them and the gangs.

Pretty much left a opening for a 3rd movie, but these days all movies do! Good popcorn movie if you love this type of humor

I saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D and the visuals were stunning. The 3D worked even better than Avatar although that film was far superior. Can't believe no one has said anything about Johnny Depp's performance, well I guess you are boys lol. I thought his performance as always was terrific. Right from the beginning you could tell it was a Tim Burton film as it had Danny Elfman's score and the stamp of Burton. I really enjoyed the film.

Next up I was going to see Clash of the Titans but haven't heard any good reports on that at all. Guess I'll have to see it for myself.

The Hurt Locker

I managed to see this movie the other day. Personally I liked the movie very much, not just because I like war movies, but just because it was a rather intense portrayal of what soldiers have to do in one of the most dangerous jobs in the world - disarming bombs. It's hard to talk about this movie without giving anything away, so I will just rate it out of 10. 7/10

Robyn, I have seen Clash of the Titans, and I saw it in 2D. I suggest doing this also. From reports I have heard from friends the 3D element in this movie is, to put bluntly, crap. When the 3D does kick in, the quality goes very grainy and looks So computer game looking its ridiculous. If you want to enjoy the movie as it is, then its a must see in 2d.

Special effects are top notch, especially looking at these kinds of movies and they way they used to portay them (1978), however story line lacks a little, and the ending leaves you wanting a bit more. All over I'd give it a 7/10. Only that high because of SE. take that away and it would only be a 5/10

Thanks Rikki, yes I had heard how bad the 3D was so best to see it in 2D like you say. I have seen the original Clash of the Titans. I found Avatar 3D was great but Alice in Wonderland was full on with the 3D which worked well.

Jake, The Hurt Locker is on my list to see as well. I've heard it's a completely different take on the normal war movies

Hi Robyn.

Yeah The Hurt Locker is very different in-terms of other war movies. This sounds silly, but I had emotional affects from the movie, good emotions, it made me understand and think more of what our soldiers are doing and how risky their lives are. Camera take is a little different at times too.

Clash of the Titans

Clash of the Titans is based on the 1981 film of the sane name and stars Sam Worthington, fresh from his success in Avatar as Perseus, the half human son of Zeus, played by Liam Neeson, but when the lord of the underworld Hades (Ralph Fiennes) threatens war, someone will have to take a stand to defend the world.

I can't think of a more duller action picture to be released this year, and if there is I'll be bloody surprised because like Dragonball Evolution, it starts off on the wrong foot as the intro made me think "Didn't I just play this on PS3" and only got steadily worse from there with Worthington himself retreating into his Aussie accent as a clear sign of his disinterest, Fiennes's laugh out loud funny performance as Hades and of course the time old tradition's of both distinguished UK actors hamming it up and actors delivering ham fisted dialogue as if they're performing Shakespeare.

But wait there's more, there's only 15 minutes of action scenes at best and the titanic Kraken seen in the film's trailer is just underwhelming, as were the Scorpions also seen in the trailer.

So folks, hang onto your money and if you happen to own a PS3, hire God of War 3 as that's far more satisfying, as for this well it's scraping through with a 1 and a half out of 5.

DATE NIGHT
Hey everyone  I went along with a girl friend yesterday and saw Date Night with Steve Carrell and Tina Fey, and OMG!! :hahohi: I didn't know anything about the movie except it had Steve Carrell in it (had NO clue who Tina Fey was except she parrodied Sarah Palin). Well, what an AMAZING time at the movies we had :cheers2: This movie has got it all, for anyone who has ever been in a relationship. Comedy, car chases, drama, semi-nudity, and the most unforseen plot changes and to say the ending is unexpected is to put it very, very mildly. I haven't EVER laughed myself so far into an asthma attack and not wanted to leave the cinema in all of my almost 38 years.

Great movie, yup. Just watch out for that computer sticky thing ;) You'll get it when you see the movie :rotfl:

Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2 is the continuation of the surprise hit of 2008: Iron Man 1, the story this time concerns the US Government pressuring Stark to hand over the Iron Man weapon, but little does he know that his decision of revealing his identity at the end of Iron Man 1 is starting to have dire consequences.

Now, to get this all out of the way I was sceptical about seeing this film, as the first trailer was released after seeing James Cameron's Avatar, and while I felt that it had the tone of Iron Man 1, I wasn't sure that the film as a whole would be good, especially since I had enjoyed the first so much, this was confirmed somewhat by the casting of Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson, both of whom I haven't been all that enthusiastic for in recent years, but eventually I put it aside and decided that I really did want to see this film.

But was that enough, well it comes in a good news/bad news kind of way, the good news is that Downey is back on form after failing to impress me in Tropic Thunder and Sherlock Holmes, his opening speech made me think "please let him host the Oscars" and laughing like a hyena at the same time, on top of that the chemistry between Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow is back, Johansson is a nice surprise after being hit and miss since Lost in Translation, I loved hearing Shoot to Thrill by AC/DC in the cinema and the film's flying scenes and action are very nicely handled.

Now comes the bad news, and that is the movie as a whole doesn't come together in the same satisfying way that the first film did, the film juggles a lot of characters old and new and doesn't succeed mainly because I think the film's script was rushed to meet the 2 year deadline, the character played by Rourke wasn't a good villain as all he did was mumble his lines in a cheesy Russian accent, the character of the rival businessman played by Sam Rockwell was literally channeling Michael Biehn and Don Cheadle was not a good replacement, as I couldn't help but think of what Terrence Howard would have done had he stayed on to reprise his role from the first film.

Overall, this film to me comes across as a rushed production, and it's a shame as I loved the first Iron Man film, now I know that some of you will see this regardless of what is said in this review but I cannot say that this film delivered as the small positives are outweighed by the large negatives listed above, so I have to give this a 2 and a half out of 5.

I really wanted to go see this movie, especially in the latter part of last year when the first promo's were being shown at the flicks. The more recent promo's have left me with a feeling of all bang and no storyline buck (so to speak). Dark Eye, is that what you meant when you said that the film didn't 'come together' b/c of the two year deadline for production? I personally loved the first Iron Man, apart from some of the obviously overdone effects. RDJ has been a favourite of mine from way back. I can't quite get my mind around Gywnneth Paltrow being in an IM film though.

Robin Hood

Well to say that when I heard that this movie was being made I groaned "another poxy Robin Hood movie!?". But whilst it was being directed by Ridley Scott and had Russell Crowe in it, I thought it might be a decent movie to go and see since I havent really been dissapointed with both Ridley's and Crowe's movies.

It very much has a mixture of Gladiator and Bravehart in the mix of things, being very much set in how life may have been in England in the day.
Battle scene's were very much Ridley's taste as I saw in Gladiator, and the movie also had a decent plot line to it with a different mix to the main character's that we see in previous Robin Hood movies.

The humour is still there with Robin's "merry men" and come out with a few laughs.

Just be prepared to sit in your chair for maybe 2 1/2 hours, and a movie worth watching on the big screen.

My review of Robin Hood:

Robin Hood is the latest collaboration between director Ridley Scott and star Russell Crowe and this time they focus on the legendary outlaw Robin Hood and the exploits that made him the legend he is today.

Well, I wish it did as this film severely dropped the ball on almost all fronts, Crowe's accent flips between his normal voice, an Irish accent and even a Scottish one, Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian has almost no joy in it and Mark Strong, an excellent actor is once again wasted as the film gives him little to do and this time he can't rise above it like he did in Sherlock Holmes.

But those are only the tip of the iceberg compared to the film's biggest problem and that is while the name of the film is Robin Hood, the film isn't interested in him or his story, only giving us a glimpse of it at the tail end, in its place is nonstop battle scenes with archers firing from high walls, a battalion of horses charging down the plains to do battle and endless swordfights that I grew tired of after the Lord of the Rings series came to an end in 2003.

So all in all what could have been a great film becomes bogged down in nonstop battle scenes, an unfocused script, joyless acting and messy editing, how did Ridley Scott sink this low, needless to say this one goes down as one of the worst of 2010 and it earns only a 1 out of 5.

Shrek 3D

Treated my fiance and myself out last night to see the new Shrek in 3D. I must say that the 3D aspect of movies works a lot better with anime than it does in real filming for the moment.

The story line is so so, with Shrek beginning to wish that he had never saved Fiona and wanting to have his old life back. Enter Ruplestilskin. A crafty little character with a huge goose... Deals were made and Shrek enters a alternate world, were things would have ended up if he didnt save Fiona. Fights his way through, blah blah blah, (no more here otherwise you might as well not watch the movie.... haha)

Now for the 3D aspect of it. Was good to see that extra depth of field, and there were a few times where it really looked like something was hovering right in front of you... But IMO its not quite up to standards even with the 3D shows that they had at movieworld and places of the sort. Toy Story 3 looks so far to be the only one that will live up to this, but thats another review another time.

Overall, the movie was a bit more dark than the first 3, and didn't quite have the whole 'fun' aspect of the previous Shrek movies. So i'm only going to give this a 5/10 review. Sorry dreamworks, but it could have been alot better than what it was.... :|

On another note, Im not sure they should have really even made a new Shrek to be honest. I was speaking to the guy behind the ticket desk afterwards, and on the opening night (last night) over 4 screenings they only sold 36 tickets... I think Shrek might have lost his fame....

A twofer for you guys:

Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 is the third instalment in the Toy Story series and this time around Andy has grown up and is leaving for college, leaving the fate of Woody voiced by Tom Hanks, Buzz Lightyear voiced by Tim Allen and the other toys uncertain.

I'll leave the plot synopsis at that, as all I'm going to say is go see this movie when you get the chance, there are all sorts of nods to the first two films that feel comfortable within the story, a fantastic opening sequence involving the toys and some REALLY touching moments that left me in tears, which is funny to say as it's essentially a movie about a boy and his toys but it feels so much more than that, in the 11 years that have passed since Toy Story 2 hit cinemas, these characters have become iconic and mean a lot to some people and they're given their full due here.

But I can't end this review without mentioning some of the new characters who are really well thought out, my favourite being Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear voiced by Ned Beatty, Michael Keaton is also really good as Ken but sadly Timothy Dalton is given too little to do, which is my only complaint about this film and that's only because Dalton's a favourite of mine.

In closing, this a funny touching and extremely enjoyable film that ties with Shutter Island as my favourite of 2010 so far, so a 4 and a half out of 5.

Inception

Inception is the latest film from dark knight director Christopher Nolan, the story here is that Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb, a man who specialises at mind extraction but his latest assignment is not to steal an idea, but implant one.

When I walked out of this film, I thought of a line said by Lawrence Fishburne in the first Matrix film, the line being "No one can be told what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself." and that applies here, I'm not going to say anything more after this apart from see it for yourself.

4 and a half out of 5, a tie with Toy Story 3 as the best of 2010.

Thanks for those Darkeye.

I have wanted to see both of those movies for a while, but our local cinema has been closed for over a year due to a fire which closed it down.

But the good news is, Warrnambool Capitol Cinema is REOPENING on WEDNESDAY 28TH of JULY in the evening, with a VIP screening of avatar 3D. Opens to the public on Thursday.

Cannot wait, we have a local 3D cinema now, and apparantley everything is improved!! :D

I saw Inception last night, and was prolly one of the best movies I have seen in it's orginality and the plotline. Pretty much had my mind still ticking over for a good hour after the movie.

I am pretty much enjoying Leonardo's movies these days, gone is the pretty boy to a darn good actor who choses his roles in movies that you will watch again.

Brilliant movie to watch!

Yep I've been hanging out to see this movie for months and everyone that sees it says how brilliant it is. My husband and son want to see it with me so it's just been a co ordination effort to see it but we'll get there eventually. Thanks for the review :)
