Smoke gone now. Remarkable that 20mm fell a kilometre away, and just 3mm here. Perhaps more with round two now 40km out West?

Like clock work. MJO influenced monsoon pulse weakens the ridge, upper lows start ruling the troposphere over SE OZ.
EC pulls trigger with 100mm+ system for us on Sunday-Tuesday.... MJO in sweet spot.

Re: Victoria - Warm then more rain - 13th-20th Jan 2020

Looks like a lottery. GFS is very enthusiastic about Wednesday night rain. The Canadian forecast goes big for the weekend/early next week. EC not interested in anything much here.

Could get 2mm. Or 100mm in the next week...

Re: Climate Driver Discussion 2019 (Enso, IOD, PDO , SAM)

The next week or so is likely to see exceptionally heavy rain over more-or-less all of Western Australia, particularly inland areas. This is good news in terms of putting a lid on the extreme temps that have afflicted the continent in the past couple of months. That said, the Simpson Desert will rem...

Re: Victoria - More heat and then some rain? - January 2nd to 5th 2020

Smoky here too. We only got 5mm, but it's welcome regardless. Currently 12c and it feels real cold. So in 5 weeks we go from record cold December day, record hot December day, to coldest January day in 29 years....

And it could be back to 40c on Friday.

Rollercoaster.

Re: Victoria - More heat and then some rain? - January 2nd to 5th 2020

Just a couple of mm today, hoping for more. Current temp is 13c and our max so far is 15.2c. It could end up as our coldest January day at the current AWS site (16.0c on 31/1/2016). Note that 5/1/1991 recorded a 14.1c max at the old prison site just before it was decommissioned. So potentially a 1 i...

Bad grassfire North of Huntly atm. I hope that doesn't get into the Kamarooka forest.

Cooling down here. Now 29c.

Spare a thought for Penrith in Western Sydney. Max of 48.4c so far today. Incidentally, some good rain in outback WA. Giles has had 42mm since yesterday. Kalgoorlie only 22c atm... I wonder if they’ll hit 50? Still have time.. I doubt it. It seems to have topped out at 48.6c. Incidentally, Hume Hwy...

We had the wind change a few hours ago but it's 34c. It's taking a while for the hot air to flush out.

Looking forward to 18c max tomorrow and potentially 10-15mm of rain. Can't wait!

Re: Victoria - More heat and then some rain? - January 2nd to 5th 2020

The past 3 years for NSW have been worse than the 1900-1902 Federation drought. Similar 3 year rain total here in fact:
1900 - 530mm
1901- 391mm
1902 - 343mm

2017 - 526mm
2018 - 388mm
2019 - 327mm
Annual average is around 540mm.

Sunday sees a big drop in temps. We might even struggle to get to 20c!

I don't think we'll get much here on the weekend. January 10 onwards might be more promising.
