Re: artefacts on weather radar since 2017/8

Thanks, hillybilly. If it's due to post-processing and not a hardware limitation, It's hard to see why a smooth transform hasn't been used. Is this ad hoc & in-house, do you think, or a published algorithm?

artefacts on weather radar since 2017/8

Hi Do forum members know anyone in the Met Bureau who is knowledgeable about the tech aspects of the rain radar? I'd really love to hear the a detailed tech explanation as to why the Laverton radar is prone to showing circular artefacts in its colour coding of the expected precipitation. Up until la...

Re: artefacts on radar scans

The radial artefact I'm talking about extends for hundreds of km (see attached recent example, still visible days later), on the National radar scan, which is a composite image. It consistently extends from Melbourne to the NE corner of Tasmania. This cannot be explained by birds or insects. I've do...

Re: artefacts on radar scans

Yes, Jasmine, good thought. The radar is on the RAAF base and there is open flat country to the N, E, and SE, with a small lake to the SSE. South of the radar, there is also an infrastructure boundary where the edge of a housing development gives way to the open land of the RAAF base. This line of h...

artefacts on radar scans

Everyone knows that radar scans are prone to radial artefactual lines - but exactly why? Would welcome any good links about this. And after watching the BoM radar maps over a long period, my impression is that the main Melbourne weather radar at Laverton is prone to showing an artefactual line towar...

dew

No day-time dew: In all the places I've lived, dew forms only at night. Sometimes it may have been raining on and off for days, with the BoM AWS (close by our house) recording a persistent rel. humidity of 100% over extended periods. By definition, the local air mass is then at the dew point. Yet in...
