Re: Climate Driver Discussion 2019 (Enso, IOD, PDO , SAM)

Much of Vic has done well for rain in past week because of:
1) Strongly -ve AAO
2) MJO in Phase 5
3) LWT in the right spot.

Triple whammy.

Re: Becoming cold, wet and windy with a series of fronts: November 6-11

4.5mm overnight. And yet nothing just a few km to our North. Got lucky.

Sunny morning now.

November has had some ripping cold outbreaks over the years. 2006 and 2007, along with 1998 from memory.

Re: Climate Driver Discussion 2019 (Enso, IOD, PDO , SAM)

These strong Westerlies have dumped huge quantities of dust from the Simpson Desert and inland Australia into the Tasman Sea off NSW this morning.

Satpic is bonkers!

Re: Climate Driver Discussion 2019 (Enso, IOD, PDO , SAM)

All those upper troughs won’t do us much good if they’re not meeting up with some tropical moisture, so here’s hoping the +IOD breaks down sooner rather than later. Indian Ocean Dipole is around +2c atm. Probably won't go neutral until after January. The Central Indian Ocean is rather hot at presen...

Just got smashed by a ripping thunder and hailstorm. Haven't checked gauge yet but likely over 10mm.

Re: Vic Trough/Front Nov 2-4 2019

21mm in gauge. Best rain since mid June.

Perhaps another 5mm with tomorrow's cold front. Quite a polar outbreak possible on Friday this week.

We'll be lucky to get 15mm based on latest outputs from the forecast models this morning. Too little too late.

Less than 2-3 days out and still massive divergence in the rainfall models. Everything from 7 to 70mm possible....

Hard to say at this stage. Probably damp first thing in the morning, clearing in the middle of the day.

EC certainly raising some eyebrows with 35mm for here. 96mm predicted for Wangaratta, but just 11mm for Ballarat....

Re: Vic Trough/Front Nov 2-3 2019

It always seems to rain on Cup day weekend (sort of). Still not quite convinced we'll get much though.

Crazy diurnal temp ranges today. 4c to 29.5c here thus far. Mangalore going for the win with 1.8c to 29.1c. Not quite a patch on the 35c diurnal ranges that the Nullabor has had.

Almost a frost here this morning. Got down to 2c.

Still heaps of divergence regarding rain for the coming weekend. EC says 2mm. GFS has 30-40mm... 🤔

Even parts of Bendigo got some decent hail this afternoon. Patchy though.

Incidentally, next weekend could be a bit wet. Hints of 15-20mm possible here.

Re: Climate Driver Discussion 2019 (Enso, IOD, PDO , SAM)

A good summary on the ABC News website:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-10-23/ ... n/11624550

It's interesting to see the parallels between this year and 1961 & 2007 in relation to the extended Indian monsoon and +ve IOD.
