Re: Vic: Fronts and troughs 9 - 16 July

Just got back from a snow chase up to Mt Donna Buang. Snowing heavily up there, blizzard like. Snowing down to the turn off road to the summit. I was in a 4x4 so I was able to get to the top car park - but they closed the last bit of road to the summit. Put the 4X4 in snow mode and it did not slip o...

Re: Vic: Fronts and troughs 9 - 16 July

Don't often see a warm front mentioned in the forecast - I saw it on the BOM map so went looking at the Tasmanian summary... Weather Situation Strong and gusty northerly winds over Tasmania will shift westerly overnight as a cold front currently near the west crosses the state. Winds will ease brief...

Re: Cold week with occasional showers: June 18-22

Looks like a blocking pattern to me after this front. We needed the rain to be continuous all winter to make up the shortfall but not looking the case. We were bound to get a block at some point.

Re: Sequence of fronts with possible low: June 9-15

Forecast for this area was 20mm and up to 35mm in outer areas. We got 7.8mm. As HB said a bit of a waste of a good inflow with the synoptics not staying strong. Still won't complain that it's raining - little bits all add up.

Spectacular north west cloud band over WA. Almost forgotten what they look like.

Re: Strong front and possible low: June 2-6

Got 10mm from the pre frontal. Quite good considering it's now clearly a western Melbourne event in the wrap around. Water supply dams now finally starting to rise and was hoping for a big rise after this event but it looks not to be. The Lerderderg river might be flowing now??

Re: Low pressure sequence. 24–31 May

Surface winds are still NW to W in Melbourne and not SW so we have a subsidence effect from the Otways and ranges to the west. Someone mentioned it is doing a right turn at the coast and that's how it looks right now. Saw this last year and often occurs and the really cold system cyclonically turn t...

The IOD looks shockingly bad. These SAM events are great, imagine what they could do with a proper tropical infeed.

Look at that baby split and break down as it comes into Melbourne. Perhaps I should be looking forward to Saturday for our rain. Of course very excited for Northern Vic which so needs this rain.

Re: Major upper and surface lows 1 - 5 May

Downgrades - most models show the low further to the west and slipping south after that. BOM rainfall totals adjusted downwards too. Hopefully it wiggles back to a more favorable rainfall event for all - we really need a proper break.

Looks like Otways rainshadow from here onwards unless the stream turns more southerly. Green drought.

Re: Settled with the odd weak front, 4 April - ?

I think our season ahead hinges on the following: 1. Indian ocean NW of Australia needs to warm up to provide middle and upper moisture - it's high time it switched to warm. 2. Central Pacific needs to cool to allow low level pacific moisture to enter Australia to support rain coming in from the NW....

Re: Settled with the odd weak front, 4 April - ?

10mm here, happy with that and keeps it ticking over. Slow recovery signs in the bush but some ferns look very dead still. Everywhere needs a big drink. If this winter is dry, expect to see dams at very low levels. Hume and Eildon are already quite low.

Re: Strong front/cold outbreak: March 29-April 2

Up to 15mm here - best rain since December last year. Really good, it's our Autumn break. Everything is very wet, creeks are up and roads have some minor flash flooding. SW flow is so good for this area.

Slightly too southerly for my liking here - but still have got 8mm. Best of the showers going through Scoresby at the moment. We so need this to continue around here.

Re: Strong front/cold outbreak: March 29-April 2

Moisture starved front will explode once it interacts with the QLD moisture over NE Victoria - already small storms popping up around there. Afraid for us the moisture looks like not getting here with this first front. Rain shadow looks likely too.

We finally got some rain. Thought it was going to miss to our south but we got a good downpour. That was so needed here. Hope we can get some more. Got 8mm.

Re: Lingering trough then strong front: March 4-8

The first big injection of moisture in WA in a long time - it's a very good sign. Unfortunately it won't link up to any front for us but at least we are seeing moisture upstream air flow for once. Here is hoping for some big NW cloud bands to bring steady rain over the rest of Autumn. Too heavy woul...
