R.I.P Rivergirl

It is with great sadness that our dear friend and forum founder Rivergirl (Robyn Lakeman) has recently passed away peacefully.
Robyn originally built this forum for Karl Lijnders back in 2009 and has been responsible for admin and updates ever since.
She will be sorely missed.

Re: Milder with a series of front: August 9-18

Line of showers has just survived crossing the bay and is headed this way. May be boosted by colder air following behind.

Re: Milder with a series of front: August 9-18

Still little or nothing on the east side of the bay, the showers are completely disintegrating as they come across the cold water. May be in with more of a chance when the flow goes a little more southerly and avoids the bay. We missed just about everything yesterday, the southern Dandenongs seemed ...

Re: Milder with a series of front: August 9-18

The wind is absolutely roaring through the trees out there this evening, so not expecting much if any rain until it dies down considerably.
it's rained on and off most of the day here, but so light and spotty we've only had about 4mm so far.

Re: La Nina - El Nino - IOD

Encouraging signs taking place in the Indian Ocean now, with warming to our N/W and cooling over towards Africa. Rainfall prospects should continue to improve if this development continues.

There was a bit of sleety stuff on my windscreen going through Olinda at 11am, temp was 4C at the time, now up to 5.4C.

Re: Victoria: Cool, wet and windy: July 23-31

Forecast seems to have backed off a little for Saturday's winds, up to 50kmh instead of 70kmh. Good news in my book! :D
Had a little sleety/hail in the cold front earlier up here.

Re: Cool, wet and windy: July 23-31

BOM are very late with the forecast update this afternoon, is this anything to do with the strike?
(Edit; updated at 5.05pm, 45mins late).

Re: Finally a cold outbreak: July 13-18

Jeepers it's all happening. I've just had a look at the pressure charts on WZ, and there's a high over Antarctica of 1071hPa tomorrow, that has to be a record high for there surely?
At the same time there's a low in the southern ocean south of NZ at 934hPa!
Incredible stuff!

Re: Finally a cold outbreak: July 13-18

Astonished to find 42mm in the Nylex (3 days worth), gets us back on track with 80mm MTD and likely good falls next week to come. JasmineStorm, I see a State of Emergency has been declared for Otago region this evening, Dunedin in danger of flooding. Christchurch too has had its highest tide on reco...

Re: Finally a cold outbreak: July 13-18

Thought the showers had gone, but radar shows another batch moving up from the south. Oddly temps are on the rise here, up to 4.5C so probably just rain now.

Re: Finally a cold outbreak: July 13-18

Take about 1C of the map below to see what a similar system in the 1950s experienced. Snow and heavy snow used to be frequent here. Well obviously, the 1940's to 1970's was the well documented global cooling cycle. Snow was more common everywhere then. The warmer cycle since then has logically coin...

Re: Finally a cold outbreak: July 13-18

Last shower dropped solid hail in Sassafras at 3.30pm turning the ground white.
If we had cold seas south of us we'd be digging ourselves out by now.

Re: Finally a cold outbreak: July 13-18

Couldn't agree more - has looked like a classic snow day for us on the charts for a while, but the reality is very different with a drizzly 6C; not even close to snow. Yes, very strange. Only explanation that makes sense to me is the warmer than average SST directly below us..... https://s10.postim...

Re: Sequence of fronts: June 22-

Yay! Slight frost on the front lawn this morning, got down to 1.2C around sunrise, our coldest for several years! No dry soils around here atm, thick, wet mud everywhere. :)
Looks like 1.1C was the CBD minimum, so pretty spot on re the forecast.

Re: Sequence of fronts: June 22-

Hillybilly will be getting excited with possible records ahead! BOM going for -1C for Mt Dandenong which almost certainly won't happen except in sheltered frost hollows up here. We've only had one proper frost at our place in the last eleven years, but the tree nursery down below us is quite often w...

Interesting, remember on Page 1 of this thread I posted the EC chart from 20th June showing a snow symbol for tonight for our area.

Yes JS, and the front is thickening up and backbuilding nicely as it crosses the bay. Just reaching us here now at 3.45pm and looking good for a few hours rain now. 7.3C.
